Sergio should go down more easily. Discuss

One of the reasons i love sergio is that he plays the game honestly and with such a desire to score the goal on his own merit, hope he never changes

I think the OP has a point. I don't think it's a case of diving at all ...but in the penalty area he believes in himself enough to want to stay on his feet regardless. It's an admirable quality but it has without doubt cost him numerous penalties since he joined us.

If anyone read my post about how I'm liking football less and less, you'd see that I love players like Agüero because he doesn't go down easily. If he was a diver we would not have won the league, won at Old Trafford last year or scored our first goal last night.

I despise diving, it's ruining the game.

I'd rather play without divers and lose than play with divers and win.

I'm saying it is a ridiculous statement, because Sergio plays on instinct, which is what makes him so good. If you try and force something into his game, he won't be the same player.

I dont think you are reading the Op`s post very clearly. He isn`t asking him to dive !!

No, he's asking him to think about going down under a challenge, when at the moment the only thought in his head is to drive on and shrug off defenders.

Exactly.

This is spot on. I want the diving bastards sorted out even retrospectivly. Sickens me seeing a player fall down and roll about the pitch because some other player came close to touching him, or, worse still brushed the sleeve of his shirt and tumbles around holding his fucking ankle!
No, no,no!

I don't actually think he should, but I think it is a subject worthy of discussion and I think it is worth a separate thread to the one about him generally.

I have noticed for quite some time that Sergio is incredibly honest in trying to stay on his feet in situations where he would not just be forgiven for going down, but where there would actually be a real advantage to the team in going down. I am not talking about Ashley Young style theatricals here, I am talking about times where he has actually been fouled.

Last night is a great example. He has got the better of the defender and is clean through - there is a definite goal scoring opportunity in front of him. The defender grabs his shirt and tries to haul him down. Most forwards in that situation would be quick to realise that there is a red card looming if the ref calls it right. I think that it is not unduly cynical for them to go down - they aren't conning the ref, they are just making sure he knows that a foul has taken place. Sergio stays on his feet, uses his strength to get away, and of course laid the ball on a plate for Dzeko to make it 1-0. The AguerooOOOO! Goal was another example of him staying on his feet and things working out brilliantly.

But how many times do you see him get a nick on the ankle in the area but stay on his feet? It doesn't always lead to a goal, in fact usually it doesn't. If he tried a bit less hard to stay on his feet after he had been fouled would it be better for the team overall?

Balotelli on the other hand possibly went down too easily and didn't get a lot of decisions that he was entitled to probably because his reputation preceded him.

Personally, I love Sergio's honesty and really like the fact that his instinct is always to get on with the game. But there is more than one view on this. I'm interested to know what other blues think.
Proper striker.

We scored that goal because he stayed on his feet, let the rags do all the cheating.

I'm not talking about cheating, and I don't think it IS cheating to go down when you've been fouled. I'm asking whether when Sergio works harder than most forwards to stay on his feet it deprives us of an advantage we should have precisely because he has been fouled.

GDM, wash your mouth out.

Diving is going down when you HAVEN'T been fouled and is cheating. Going down when you've been fouled isn't cheating or diving.

We don't know where it's been.
