Just a question for our medical experts how can you not identify what sex 27 bodies are ? Surley that's impossible ? Skull shape, pelvic shape, clothing etc etc ?
Just to give this a bump as no one seems to have answered how is this possible ?
If you're happy to wait for the answer, I will ask an expert, the next time he's around in work. He's been involved with the identification of bodies from wars, exhumed graves, air crashes, etc.

I found that unusual too. They can dig up bodies from hundreds even thousands of years ago and identify the gender through, I assume, skeletal structure...maaybe dna?

Seems unusual that bodies pulled from water that have been there a few years tops are unidentifiable.

This is what I find so strange they might not be able to identify the person but the sex ? Not all 27 can have been floating round for years .even stupid things like clothing ,underwear ,earrings ,jewelry etc .and arnt male and female skeletons different anyway ? Very very strange !!

Would make a great tv mini series, "Sarge! There's been another"!

Anyway we should set up a Bluemoon sting, maybe we'll get famous.

Reporting it in the daily telegraph today .maybe already mentioned but they are saying all the bodies identified have been male .how strange ?

I thought the canals are only 3-4ft deep so even if these people had their feet stuck in mud they could still stand up and be seen / heard calling for help.

Spent the day walking about Durham and there's a full scale search on for a 19 year old lad missing since Wednesday. Mountain rescue have been going up and down the river in dinghys and there are posters up all over town. Really makes you think what the families must be going through.

Happened last year as well, pulled the lad's body out of the river a few days later. Durham is a full blown river though and seems to have comparatively fewer incidents.

That's very true, I hear of very few incidents like this in Durham. The perfect recipe of students, bars and clubs and a tidal river would, you'd think, make this sort of tragedy all the more likely but it just doesn't happen here.
