Set Pieces

I’m not sure the set piece coach has had that much to do with it. There’s been no fancy choreographed moves with everyone standing in a circle doing the Ring-a-ring-a-roses in the D before running into the six yard box in V-formation, it’s just been good crosses finding a man in the box who’s been determined to reach the ball.

Someone who should be praised (despite some bobbins crosses last night) is Foden who’s set piece delivery has improved a lot in 2025 and for me he puts in a better corner than De Bruyne ever did (which is strange because DB was the best open play crosser and passer of the ball I’ve ever seen).

Foden’s technique replicates ex-RL player, Kevin Sinfield,’s penalty kicking technique - body shape, where he places his head and shoulders after kicking it.
You watch Phil’s corners & free kicks last night?

Little Phils corners last night were abject. However,Tiji put some blinders in against Sunderland.
I especially loved the last one he took where he held both arms aloft for a good 30 seconds (which is normally an indication it's going to far post) before hitting the first man and us suddenly on the back foot again defending!!

Am I allowed to observe that, had the keeper dived the right way he would almost certainly have saved Erling's penalty?
Had he dived the other way Erling would have put it in the other corner.

If you look at Erling from behind the goal he's took his eye off the ball as he's about to strike it and he's focused on Courtois.

Not sure if he usually does this or he's changed his technique. Or, maybe just for Courtois.

Seems like a fundamental change in technique to me.

Looks like he has changed his technique. He delayed a second on his run and put it in the opposite corner to the keeper. Erling just gets better and better.

There was hesitation, he placed it there after the keeper had started going the other way so little danger of it being saved last night, however as a general rule, I don't like the side foot finish. He used to stick his laces through and smash them, they were going in or they were missing the target, the keeper potentially saving them didnt come into the equation, I much prefer that kind of penalty.

That’s what it means?
Not always tbf, some teams may use it different but from experience and discussing it in the past with several pros I know at various levels that tended to be the consensus.
I was curious about it in the past which is the only reason I brought it up to them.

One of Foden’s free kicks set up a 1-1 chase for them!

They are generally still woeful on the whole but the odd one that isn’t is leading to goals which is great!
We miss Rodri’s presence at them. We only seem to get anywhere when we aim at Gvardiol’s head.

Dias, Haaland and O’Reilly need to become bigger presences in the opposition box.

I think it's a new technique - haven't noticed him doing it before, but it was very noticeable last night. I think Mario (and maybe Yaya) used to do the same thing.

Haaland is frequently bear-hugged without consequence at corners (especially against Arsenal), which makes it hard to be a presence. If I had one piece of advice to improve our corner success, it would be to not try to fight our way out of bear-hugs, but just to make the run and if there's a foul, let it take you down. Too many clear fouls are waved off because they're supposedly "both doing it". We should make it very clear that we're not laying a finger on them and see how bad the refs look when they continue not to give us anything, but are unable to say they're "both doing it".

Foden and Cherki both... and indeed Reijinders too - are putting in very dangerous crosses. And we've switched up our corner routines to attempt to free Gvardiol b/c Haaland in particular (and I think Dias too) are heavily marked. Our corners are pretty good ATM, IMO.

I thought it was a change in technique. I have been wishing for some time that he watched the keeper and waited till they commit and that is what he did vs Real. Good for him, I hope he continues.
