It is a good thing, but it applies to countries who have declared war upon each other, and are signatories to it mutually.
The Taliban are a proscribed terrorist organisation, responsible for dreadful terrorist atrocities, complete subjugation and
rape/murder of women, amongst other delights.
I'll not go into too much detail, but my dad, in the Ardennes forest saw a Lieutenant actively shooting with his pistol
wounded and screaming German infantry, repulsed in an attack. They had been met with dum dum bullets (the wooden tipped ones)
and phosphorous bombs, illegal under the Geneva convention, fired and thrown by my dad and his mates.
I can't for the life of me understand why anyone can condone this Marine Sergeant receiving the same sort of
sentence handed out to to the truly bad, and thoroughly evil bastards that we regularly see through our legal
system.

I don't believe anybody is forced into doing these 'dirty jobs'. You sign up, you get paid and you know what could potentially happen to you, If you or any other soldiers don't like it - don't sign up. I'm not sure why I or anyone else owes any service personnel any debt of gratitude beyond 1945 tbh.
This suggestion that we should support our troops for keeping us safe from the bad guys is a load of bollocks, especially when they behave like the enemy. Should any foreign forces invade our country, I can assure you I won't be sat in my safe space, I'd be out there doing my bit. It's typical of an ex soldier to suggest civilians can't look after themselves.
