Here's the problem with Shawcross for me. If we're looking to sign a centre back, should it not be someone who is competition for Kompany/Nastasic, not a player who would be content picking up a wage packet whilst being third choice centre half?

That poster eh !. Ryan Shawcross made his MAN UNITED debut in the league cup v Crewe Alex, and he and his family support MAN UNITED, so that poster isn't talking nonsense. So for that reason Ryan I'm out !. And I'm talking nonsense, not as childish as some of the nonsense I read on here.

Oh and just to confirm, what I said regarding his allegiance to Utd, was meant as a light hearted fucking joke !. I actually think he is a decent defender who is above Lescott. I know a lot of Stoke fans that reckon he's on a par with Dennis Smith. Nonsense my arse !.

I'm afraid he is serious
i have unfortunatly heard that Stoke have a 6 year deal in place which if he turns down will see him shipped out to get some transfer money in this window.... and that at 25 we see him as a long term signing as Lescott and Kolo expected to move in summer.

Hummels(who i rate highly) is far too expensive for a centre back at 24 odd mil, it would be madness to spent that when we have Nastasic who could be a really really top defender in my opinion but he needs games! Think all we need is abit of cover for injuries or bans at centreback and i believe shawcross would be a solid back up for round about 7mil.
People worried about his capabilities at European level (which we won't know about unless he's tested), if he's a second choice CB he simply won't play in Europe will he unless there are injuries? He's proven himself at Premier League level, I certainly wouldn't consider him a "Sinclair" type signing as Shawcross has been impressing for a long time at Stoke now, not just for a portion of one season like Sinclair did.
I think our defence is going to get a bit of a makeover anyway with Kolo and Lescott probably gone by the end of the summer window, could lead to two new signings unless the boss puts faith in Rekik to fill one of the spots. I imagine the home grown quota thing would play a big part in signing him if we did as quite a few of our home grown contingent could be gone in the next few years, like Lescott (age/wages), Barry (age/wages), and Sinclair (lack of quality).
Shawcross has averaged 1 more tackle, 1 more successful interception, and 1 1/2 more clearances per game than Lescott so far this season too so there may not be this difference in quality some think once you put Shawcross in a better team.
