Shay Given to Arsenal (merged)

Re: we've agreed to let Shay Given join Arsenal

Would rather let Shay go than Joe tbh.

Re: we've agreed to let Shay Given join Arsenal

I dont really get this concept of deciding to release players, but then trying to dictate where they make their living. If we dont want them, let them go to the club that makes the biggest offer.

If say Bellamy went to Spurs he might do very well for them. But he might also get a bang on his dodgy knee in the first match and be out for 6 months. Lets stop worrying about what these players do once they've left us.

A few years ago Wigan rugby league club wanted to buy a hooker, Micky Higham, from St Helens to replace their hooker, Terry Newton, who they planned to sell to Brafdford. But St Helens didnt want Higham to play for Wigan because of their club rivalry. Instead they sold him to Bradford. On the same day Bradford exchanged Higham for Newton, leaving St Helens looking fairly ridiculous. I wonder if that could happen to us?

We could stop it by insisting that all the players we want get rid off only go out on loan deals, but is that what we want?

That's pretty much the crux of the matter when you break it down. Neither would be happy on the bench and both would want to leave if they were not No. 1. Add this to the fact that they are of a similar standard, and which one do you let go; the one who could be our keeper for the next 2 years or the one who could be our keeper for the next 12 years?

Shay's a great keeper and I certainly won't disrespect him, but as Trump would say, it's a no brainer.

Sit the arrogant tw@t on the bench unless someone is willing to add 50% to what we paid for him. We have raised his value.

This is the kind of attitude that I despise, supporter of the same club or not.

Given is a model pro, at 34 he still has 2 or 3 and maybe more good seasons left in him as a number 1 keeper for a top club. He saved us so many many points last year.

I'm fairly sure that Swedish keeper played the 8-1 game.
correct - Isaksson, Sun, Dunne (SO), Ball, Garrido, Ireland, Fernandes, Corluka, Petrov, Vassell, Benjani - Castillo, Elano & Hamann were used subs, Hart & Caicedo were unused.

Fucking hell, come a long way havent we?!

Isaksson 2, Sun 2, Dunne 8(SO), Ball 0, Garrido 2, Ireland 6, Fernandes 3, Corluka 8, Petrov 6, Vassell 3, Benjani 4. Wow our entire 11 was only worth about 44m

And the moment he gets even a hint he wont be No1 he spits his dummy out not only tells the media he would leave the club but Joe Hart would do the same.

serious lack of respect. Back in the day a player would fight even harder to get his spot back at the earliest oportunity. If Joe gets a lengthy knock Shay can come in and if his form is good enough he will stay there.

No chance we will loan him to Arsenal. Perhaps Fulham or Celtic. I also reckon we will add a clause that we can bring him back if Hart and taylor are both injured. This will be good for all parties. Shay plays, City are covered, We don't strengthen a direct rival and everyones happy.

i say put him on the bench and tell him to STFU, everybody in the club has competition, why should he be excluded from that?
if they decide they cant keep him on the bench, than loan him to a non-rival team and add a clause to it where it say, if hart gets injured than we have the right to take him back

I agree 100%

I agree but whilst I like Given I don't now agree that he's a model professional, a model pro should not air his dirty washing in public, he's effectively put himself on the market via the press. Hart's done the same thing, he too lost a lot of respect from me.

Given wants to play and be number 1, I understand that but you've got two top players fighting for that position, he should fight fit it and prove it's his, not spit his fucking dummy out after 1 game FFS. Let's not forget too that he;s just come back from a serious injury that he's had before, there's no way we could bank solely on him at the moment.

Re: we've agreed to let Shay Given join Arsenal

I know it's easy to think we shouldn't be letting players go to our competitors, but sooner or later we have to realise that us winning the league will be about what we do, not what our competitors do.

We have to assume our competitors will get the type of players they want irrespective of where they get them from. That's their business. If Arsenal didn't get Shay, then they'd get someone else just as good anyway. That's the only way you can look at it.

Our business is to run our club the best we can. To be the best team we can with the best, fittest, sharpest players. And if our team is the best, we will win things, irrespective of what any other team is doing.
