SWP. As long as they aren't preaching, why can't you respect the belief of a religious person? Simply on the grounds that they are human, that they, through whatever study or chance, have landed on the idea that Islam or Christianity or whatever it is, is their truth.

I'm not religious, but I can respect another person's belief. I don't agree with it obviously, I think it's probably a load of bollocks like you must do, but as long as they're good people why does it matter.. especially to an Atheist.

It's such a big thing to say you don't respect another person's beliefs. It's only having due regard, a little bit of humility and consideration.
Because a belief is a belief. I can seperate the person from the belief but I refuse accept that any belief deserves respect.

I have no issue respecting theists if I think they are good people, but I'll never respect a belief that is irrational whether they have landed on Islam or Christianity or Yogic fucking flying 'as their truth'.

If they never wish to discuss religion with me then fine, if they want to bring it up, I'll be more than open with my views on it.

My question was meant for respecting people who believe in God. I worded it wrongly, also misunderstood your earlier post, I was on a roll :/

Now that you've answered though, I guess you have no respect for somebody's belief in God because you said any belief, or any belief you find to be irrational. I respect that point of view :) I myself am not quite there. I am 99.99% there but because I don't know absolutely I can say I can respect a God believer.
I'll narrow it down to 'I have no respect for any of the man made organised religions'.

Whether there was a creator, I doubt, but can't say 100%. What I am sure of is that any creator is not omnipotent, omniscient and they did not create the universe for our scummy little species.

You can respect a person without respecting their beliefs

I work with 2 Jewish women, I get on with them well but if/when they bring religion up I will express my views which are contrary to theirs and I'd say that goes for the majority of the population?

We respects people's right to have a belief but they also have to respect other people's right to question it, dismiss it or ridicule it. Isn't that how we all get on, we feel free to express ourselves in a reasonable manner?

Racist!

Look, I think we're all on the same page. None of us wants to let the agenda be set by the nutters of any persuasion. We all value freedom of expression, as long as that's within the law. But on the overall scale of things worth dying for to protect that freedom I don't think a cartoon was high on that scale. Journalists in many places risk their lives and liberty to expose corruption and wrongdoing yet this lot died because of a cartoon. Doesn't seem worth the right to mock someone to me.

Must admit I am lapsed somewhat, but I am a Jedi believer according to the last couple of census'
