Skipton, or somewhere like it.

Malham. Lovely little village and you can walk up to and around Malham cove/tarn area. Some cracking pubs that way as well it's only an 75 minutes from Manchester. Lovely part of England.

Seconded.

Malham Cove is an amazing place.

Save Skipton for the summer and hire out a barge for the day, its not cheap (about £100) but you can get 10 people on so its not bad value for a family day out especially if you can fill it. Make a deal with someone that they do the car driving and you do the barge driving (you can drink and drive on the canals :). Dont worry about the locks as you wont have to bother with these on a day trip.

Went to Buxton years ago, might give that a go again.

Skipton is far better.

The market is good, some nice pubs in the centre, a couple of great chippies (Yorkshire chippies are the best in the world!), the canals, and they've recently opened up the Russian Tea House which is a decent place for a cuppa.

Alternatively, head to Haworth... steam trains, museums, great pubs and chippies, deep in the heart of Bronte country.

In fact, do them both. Near enough to do the same day.

Like the look of Clitheroe, just had a google.
Did you leave a space between "clit" and "hero" mate?

How about skip and ton?

I thought it was a serious question.

Looking at going out for the day on Saturday. Nowhere too far like. All we want is somewhere we can mooch around, go for a drink and bite to eat and just potter about. Need to get away for the day.
Some friends at work used to go on about Skipton and its market. Supposed to be a few nice pubs there too. Anyone been? If not, or if it's bobbins, can anyone suggest anywhere within the 100 mile mark?

Nice question.

Skipton is wonderful.

You could also consider the Settle to Carlisle railway and Clitheroe has some expert butchers and wine merchants.

Cowmans is over-rated tosh for the tourists... but Byrnes is a treasure trove of all that is great in fine drinking!

The castle has been renovated and is impressive, the Emporium is a cracking foodie and cafe bar type place.

But not particularly a tourist haunt to be fair.
