Sky - Mané Red card poll (official appeal rejected)

It's been reduced on occasion - there was one a year or two back I think, Matic vs Burnley.

It's very rare though.
Matic. And it was led by the media much like this one.

Was a disgraceful decision then, and I fully expect the same with Mane.

It does seem likely.
The Matic one was based on the Burnley player (Barnes?) catching him quite badly soon after he was back from injury, I think.

It should lead to almost every 3 match ban being appealed.

It will (or rather should) set a ridiculous precedent if they reduce this ban. Most red card offences are reckless/dangerous rather than intentional attempts to injure. In theory every dangerously high challenge, even ones that break legs will now be appealed and in theory bans will be reduced if this appeal works. But, we know that's not the case, this ban might be reduced because it is Liverpool and then everything will just go back to normal and your average borderline red (like Cahill's on the opening day) will just be three match bans as usual even though they are less of a red card offence than Mane's. If this is reduced, it is seriously going to make me question whether it's worth bothering anymore, it will just prove that the game is bent as fuck.

Once upon a time, in the days of Dave Ewing, God rest his bones, this type of incident was classed as 'dangerous play' and was sanctioned with an indirect free kick. You can never tell, no matter how contrite the culprit might be, whether there was intent or not, unlike some thug who just launches themselves parallel with the ground and takes someone out at the knees or sticks the nut on an opponent. With every law change there will always be some attempt to massage the situation in order to negate the law and put an incident in a 'grey' area. All things being equal, a three match ban for Mane shouldn't be equal to someone using an elbow to fracture a cheek bone.

I see there was another moment of dangerous play in the Wiiiiiiist Hiiiiiiiiim game last night where Kevin Friend, the Whistling Wanker on this occasion, gave neither a card nor a free kick! What it leads to unfortunately is that where players are correctly called for reckless play an attempt is made to show how they were badly treated and the incident ought to be downgraded to the lowest level. Jonny got it right; Jones and Friend got it hopelessly wrong.

Sky are pathetic. They seemed to spend yesterday interviewing as many people as possible (managers and ex-players) on their opinions over the red card. It seemed to me most of the opinions they shared were that it wasn't a red and that Liverpool and Mane were harshly treated.

Where was their interest when Walker was wrongly sent off? Or last season when Walker should have been sent off last season for pushing Sterling in the box. Or when Milner should have seen red for denying Sterling a goal scoring opportunity. Or when Luiz should have been dismissed for bringing down Aguero.

Gary Nevillie and his ridiculous thoughts on the matter was conspicuous in his absence last night on MNF - strange that.

If the FA have any balls - I won't hold my breath - then the fucker and Liverpool should have a further game ban added for a frivolous appeal. If they reduce it to one game it will be a fucking disgrace.

I for one am glad they are appealing the ban, it shows how deluded they really are. It also allows us the chance to see how the FA react.
Hopefully they react by increasing the ban to 5 games ... They won't reduce it that's for sure, Dippers are pissing in the wind, the law clearly states that the offence was a direct red regardless of intent, based on that I would love to know on what grounds they are appealing

When you consider the furore over Agueros alleged elbow against West Ham and the amount of red cards you see where the player 'raises his hand to an opposing player and yet we are seeing serious pundits argue that a flying kick to the head shouldn't merit a sending off. Seriously, just what the actual f*ck!?

If you were on the fence about media bias in this country then surely the argument has just been ended by the media reaction to Mane?

I'm not sure there's grounds to extend anything - they're not appealing against the decision.
