I agree we need to be more clever like Spain, Germany and Italy have shown over the years(we show all our cards early and rarely surprise after that) maybe play some rope-a-dope with teams, maybe switch through the gears(we seem to have only 2) to catch them out when they feel settled.
I don't think we're good enough to do that though. The three teams you mentioned all regularly win/won tournaments with players like Xavi,Iniesta, Ballack,Ozil and Pirlo.
Currently our best midfield player is Rooney ffs.

Before a ball was kicked everyone thought they were the worst team in the Group. I don't think anyone saw Russia's demise. But there again I'll state the same only inserting Russia:
