Smoke bombs yet again

Some people might be interested to know that in America fans are allowed to set off smoke canisters in certain parts of the ground. The reason being they think that they are inevitable, and if they can contain them in one particular area of the ground, people who don't want to be part of it don't sit near them.

Oi...Careful! You are on the brink of saying something sensible. Back-track quicky!

Suggest the bogs on level one at the north end of the East stand they seem to allow smoke already in there.

To be honest, I just think there is a massive difference in views towards atmosphere at football between the older generation and the younger generation. We don't have as many match going fans who are in their mid 20's to mid 30's than other clubs for various reasons (Just my view) and I think anyone older than that got to see English football when it was the pride of Europe. English teams were something to be feared, with Liverpool/Forest/Villa winning the EC something daft like 7 out of 8 years! British fans were loyal, loud and respected, getting comfortably bigger gates than any other country in the world. Now the younger generation who never saw terracing or hooliganism, and who have only ever lived through the disenchanted world of Sky Sports, look at our European competition with these ultras groups and different approach to supporting their teams and are jealous and want something similar i.e. standing. But these leniencies aren't possible in a country with as much red tape in the works as England. Hence why you get some knob heads who go to the games looking for fights and you get other knob heads going to the games with smoke bombs to try and mimic European football fans in a kind of 'what ever you can do we can do better' way. They aren't organised here and you end up with people who don't want to be involved unwillingly getting involved, which is the issue here. And as I said earlier in the post we haven't had the integration from the older generation to the younger generation that some other clubs have had because we have missed out on a lot of 'would have been blues' around that age gap. Hence more contrasting views and a big split right down the middle on views towards this type of thing. 99% of people under the age of 25 would probably say they like smoke bombs... and then maybe 99% of people over 40 would say they hate them! But my point here is posting about it and having a conversation like we are having now won't change everyone's views and more importantly won't stop people bringing smoke bombs or other offensive material into the stadium. The only way to do that is getting the police/stewards to do their job right and actually search people! I'm less concerned about smoke bombs getting in the ground than other things....

Good post mate and agree in the main. Guilty as charged - I'm over 40 :)) The game has changed immeasurably and of course something has been lost in the process. That shouldn't stop us being able to sing loud and make a decent atmosphere - look at the derby games, no need for flares and choreography there?

Mind you, I think a chunk of what has been lost in the process is that we are no longer shite! I think a lot of the whit and banter was born out of necessity to be entertained!

agree completley, it would make a lot more sense to have an area where fans could set off smoke bombs. Then they could safely be used and fans that dont want to be near them can move away.

btw I wonder how all those poland fans survived. ??

Can't each away ground just spray the away fans with the colour paint of their choice? Down from the rafters at random intervals? Would look awesome and really add to the atmosphere. For the price of an away ticket, it's the least the fans can expect.

Excellent input, very impressed.

Setting off smoke bombs and bringing back safe standing are not mutually compatible. It's suggesting to the politicians and law makers of this country that football fans are still light years behind being decent human beings and should still be treated as so by clubs, stewards, the police and society in general. Why is it only football that has certain rules bestowed upon the paying public? It's because the rule makers think we can't be trusted and setting off smoke bombs will only help those that don't want safe standing to have a stronger argument.

I dont see how safe stand standing and smoke bombs are related. Yesterdays incident happened in an all seater stadium anyway. It will happen regardless.
