Smoking

Yeah we are all aware that you feel the need to share everything about your life. Anyhow what your family or my family have gone through because its not just you that has family Karen is totally irrelevant.

Posting what you did is just fucking insensitive but as per you are never wrong. When you butt out of everyone's else life maybe I will pay attention to you.

So let people be and in the words of Karen jog on.
I love how i am rent free in your head , lol

Plenty of talk about cancer, and rightly so, but even those who are lucky and avoid that are quite literally destroying their lung tissue - life will become a constant period of feeling short of breath, wheezing, getting recurrent infections, requiring long term oxygen therapy whilst at home (which you won’t be allowed if you still smoke) and significantly being reduced in your ability to function.

Not really how I want to spend my retirement.

Just for visualisation here is a CT of someone with emphysema (smoking related airway disease) - the lower areas of lung are more normal, the black areas in the upper lungs are the holes where the tissue has been destroyed.

Obviously everyone is entitled to make their own choices, but doesn’t hurt to be informed, and sometimes I think seeing what you are doing to yourself can help. I know for one that I don’t want my lungs to look like that.

It's entirely an individual's choice regarding what brings them pleasure and what they do with their bodies. However, I had the misfortune of being hospitalised twice with pneumonia 12 years ago. I even had to watch the FA Cup semi final Vs United on the ward. This has made me ultra aware of my lung health, and is one of the reasons I chose to get fit and stay fit in retirement through swimming and running.
Personally, I would never consider carrying out an activity which reduces the ability for my lungs to function properly.

I don't think there is an adult alive who doesn't know smoking is really bad for them. I also think most people have always known tbh. I mean you are inhaling bloody smoke into your lungs:-)

My view is quite simple we are designed to survive by breathing in clean air. Unfortunately clean air is hard to find nowadays. Us humans have strange habits but we also have free choice. I smoked for nearly 30 years and vaped for years after that. I knew it was stupid and I may well have quit too late.

I will only have myself to blame.

My Gran smoked until she was 80, and then went into a home because she was suffering from dementia. She seemingly forgot she had ever smoked and didn't have another and she died at 88.
My mum is a whole different ball game. Has had schizophrenia all her life (she never took her meds) and went into a home aged 66. She's now aged 77 and has breast cancer and dementia.
Still smokes likes a chimney and can be bloody awkward about it.
She was in hospital recently with a kidney infection. Ran out of fags and I got a call from the hospital almost begging me to take in some more as they couldn't cope with her. She is a bloody nightmare about it, but it's one of the very few pleasures she has ever had.

Indeed and I appreciate that.

I just sometimes think it’s easy to dissociate oneself from the side effects of things when the side effects can’t be seen and won’t be felt in the short term. I’m in a career where I see daily the effects of the substances people put into their bodies (e.g. alcohol on the brain/liver, IV drug use on the vasculature) - I find physically seeing these effects is easily enough to put me off!

After a horror of a year last year I started smoking. My mate has the ones that are all white and puts menthol pads in to flavour them. That was around October just to find something else to distract from what was going on.

It’s now nigh on April and I’m smoking 20 a week and keep saying that will be the last one. Then I’ll be at the shop.

I actually feel worse. The coughing and what I cough up is rank.

Who the fuck starts smoking on their early 50s? Other than nicking a fag from my grandad in the 80s it’s never appealed to me.
