So playing the weakened team against Utd worked out

It would have worked if we had won. In both the Swansea and United games better players were brought on so I don not think the intention was to get knocked out.

The win against Barca still means we are likely to come second, so it was not that important to qualification.
It was very important. Now we only need to win one more game to assure ourselves of getting out of the group.

You're welcome. :-)

But Managers come and go, players come and go and Eccles Blue will still be supporting MANCHESTER CITY!!!
Absolutely you will and that's great and I'm glad you're a City fan. But sometimes managers need to be a little more analytical and less sentiment led and look at the bugger picture.

If one of the big guns were injured against a tag team in the least important competition then this place would have had a melt down.

I suspect that the club's opinion of the two domestic cup competitions took something of a battering last season. The Capital One Cup win was ok but in no way made up for what was an otherwise disappointing season. And it had a detrimental impact on our PL form. The FA Cup exit left a sour taste. Apparently it wasnt just the scheduling of the game that led us to field a weakened team. At the time we still had a decent shout of winning the PL, but were told that if we reached the semi final of the FA Cup we would be playing on Tuesday and Thursday in the final week of the season.

My guess is that Pep has been given a very clear mandate to focus on the PL and CL. If we draw United in the FA Cup we'll probably put out a similar team.

I think you're reading far too much into it. Pep has made it pretty clear with his comments about the fans vs. UEFA that he doesn't care what happened before he arrived, it's a new beginning.

Obviously he will prioritise League and CL above domestic cups but Pep is a serial winner and knows success breeds success, and he's also pretty proud of his 3 trophies a season average I think he'll want the FA Cup. The fact it has it's own weekends helps too.

Totally vindicated, of course. Doubly so with United dropping league points. But it was never a contentious decision, it was always a "no brainer".

OP, how can you be sure of something that never happened?? what is the point?

we may have fielded the strongest team at Utd and won and taken confidence and beaten WBA and barca handsomely, we may have done a million other combinations or eventualities.

'told you so'

Cheap point-scoring is the point.

not according to most people on here... They were calling for his head. I think anyone calling for the managers head should be banned. totally unworkable but would be nice to see. fkin flappers
I'm in your corner on this, not about banning though, but I was in shock at the venum against Pep from our own fans for playing a young side against their best 11 at their ground and only losing 1-0, that in itself was enough to goad them with. The abusive reaction was uncalled for.

Played two very good games against WBA and Barcelona.

Of course we don't know what would have happened had we played our strongest team at Utd. We might have won, but I'm sure we would not have beaten WBA and Barca. Guardiola made a good call, and events have proved him right.

Mourinho was the one who bottled it, and as a result dropped point at the weekend.

How can you be? We may have won all three games and in fact scored 5 or 6 against Barca, not missing the umpteen chances we had.

Anyway, it's academic isn't it. We played the weakened side agains the scum; we lost. End of.

Do you think that, unless injured, Aguero should play in every game in every competition in addition to his international commitments?
