Social Media - is it really a good thing?

Social media when it 1st came out, as a way for friends and family to keep in contact was a power for good. it has since become a total mess, manipulated by bad actors into a toxic sludge..

it started to turn when it became about money ( obviously always about money ), more advertising, more data gathering, more algorithms to drive engagement that push's people to content they dont want just so you then have more eye time for more adverts etc.

then you get into the bad actors and bots really messing with it all.

A friend of mine developed a whole new social media platform designed to stop all this. he was diagnosed with terminal cancer so developed it with the view of not making money. it was really nice but unfortunately didn't take off before he passed away.

Worst thing to happen to mankind in the last 80 years. Absolutely destroyed a generation and has leaked into generations before it. Fuels hatred, wars, manipulates elections. Gives a platform to people who should be nowhere near any kind of communication device.

Absolute gormless cunts scrolling for hours through social media. Created a huge distortion of reality for the masses and what acceptance behaviour and morals are.

But Auntie Jean can see pictures of the kids growing up so it's all good.

One bonus though, if you can educate your child on why it's such a fucking brain trap and a waste they'll have the pick of any job they want when they're older because 95% of their peers aren't going to be employable in any sector.

This is the kind of shit that drives SM and another reason why it's toxic.

This is nothing against the actor involved. She's seen a money making opportunity and ran with it. It's about how a lot of this is common place

Closed most of my online accounts and hardly bother getting my phone out any more unless I'm texting someone. Its nice.

Come off social media pretty much, only one i have is instagram for my kids pics.
why be on a platform full of trolls and bots ? what is the point.

Don't do Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any of them. Never have. Just Bluemoon and a few other forums.
There as a music site called Jango some years ago...that was good for socialising with people from all over. Good vibes only.

I visit here and a music forum regularly.
Facebook helps me to connect with people I know but don't see very much as they are all over the planet.

I subscribed to one of these Local Community group things, supposed to be about people helping neighbours with useful advice. Seems now to be infested with racist trolls and nutters (and daily reports of people having parcels nicked off their doorsteps, or receiving parcels wrongly delivered to their house...and then moaning about all the shops closing on the high street and in the city).
