He's a high profile professional footballer, seen more offensive stuff written about Barton in our daily rags.

Beckham puts up with it.

Everyone thinks this a new phenomenon, George Best and Gascoigne took appalling abuse in two separate eras, Best was called queer every week, Gaascoigne was called fat and retarded they just dealt with it.
Actually I have not seen more offensive stuff written about the thug Joey Barton in our daily rags. Everything written about Barton is true and anyone who saw the 'McDonalds' video where the phsyco bully kicked the shit out of some poor defenceless young kid knows that Barton got off lightly - if he were not Joey Barton he would still be 'taking it up the arse' in HMP now.

Yeah and look at what happened to Best and Gascoigne. One's six feet under after getting through two livers and the other is publically living through his issues and has been near to death himself at times.

Great examples of people who coped with being the subject of offensive chants week in and week out - I don't think.

some poor defenceless young kid

Really? You know this do you? Not defending barton's actions at all, but do you know the lead up to this incident? No? Then don't make such comments..
Don't tell me - the guy asked for it - he deserved a beating. Just like Dabo, Jamie Tandy, that schoolboy Everton fan he had a pop at. I will comment because Bartons actions invite criticism. He has got off lightly because he's a premiership - well for the moment - footballer.

It's strange how much our very own Stephen Ireland has grown in confidence both on and off the pitch since Barton slung his hook - the rumours were that Barton scared the shit out of him.

Now you're being silly.... Where did i say he asked for it... I said "do you know the facts?" and "do you know what caused the incident"

As for Tandy... don't want to comment apart from to say setting fire to somebody's shirt isn't the smartest thing to do....

No offence intended to anyone but i think the whole episode is way out of control. A multi millionaire footballer being called names ..well feck me lets put all the chanters in prison and give him a million pound compensation case against hurting his feelings...even though everyone is saying that the said person is not as song suggests !!! Grow up !!!

Could you shout racial abuse to a footballer, then? Is it wrong that racism is being stamped out of football? And if it isn't and it's right that racism should no longer be a part of footballer, then why should homophobic chants or homophobic abuse not go the same way?

And the point is that racism and homophobia are offensive to other members of the crowd, too.

I am not homophobic or do i ever chant abuse at a football match whatever the reason. I just think that the lengths that people are taking this high profile case over anything else is beyond reason.....if it was someone in school or in the street do you think it would recieve the same attention. It just stinks of who he is and what he can afford to do !!! I have very little sympathy and i dont apologise for it.

I think you're wrong about if it happened in the street it would not receive the same attention. Sol Campbell's brother is serving a prison sentence for physically attacking someone who made gay slurs about his brother in the street. And as with everything in life peoples behaviour changes when in a mob situation - which is what happens at football matches. A lot of the individuals singing racist and gay chants at a football match would never do it on their own in the street but they will do it with a crowd because it makes them feel stronger - alchohol also plays a part - but what ever way you look at singing racist or gay chants it's bullying on a mass level. Its the way that gang culture operates and indeed succeeds - its the same principle.
