Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

An injury to Rodri would derail our entire season.
When you look at how poor Philips looks it just shows how valuable players like Ferna and Rodri are. If Philips can't cut it this season I reckon we will be in for another MF like Rice (although he may be overpriced and we might look for better value overseas).
Its clearly not easy to find these players. Bellingham is probably the standout with Rice just below that level, there's going to be a frenzy for those two.

My god we were blessed to get Ferna, he came in and never really put a foot wrong for us, OK occasionaly done for pace when filling in at CH but what a player. Same goes for Rodri tbf. He's never looked out of place.

Philips just looks like a fish out of water.

I warned against complacency in the pre-match thread yesterday when many of us were looking forward to who we'd get in the semis & the rotation policy in readiness for the Derby on Saturday.

Even in his presser, Pep was talking about rotation for last night & having some crazy plan for ManUre. We lost the tie & the players we were resting for the Derby, ended up playing & getting rinsed anyway as we chased the match.

Fair play to Southampton. They had a plan & attacked us from minute one & more than deserved their victory. We looked distracted from the start & it's evident the derby was uppermost in everyone's mind & we paid the price.

We had more than enough on the pitch to compete with Southampton. I reckon if we were at home on Saturday against Bournemouth, this same team would have approached the Carabao Cup as the gateway to the semis that it was, instead of players seemingly wanting to save themselves for Old Toilet.

I said from the start of the season that our success would come down to the new arrivals, how quickly they settled down & how effective they prove to be.

Haaland, Alvarez, Akanji, Ortega, Philips & Gomez. As Pep said, we can't keep flogging the same players every three days, week after week, month after month.

I also said our failure to solve our LB crisis would cost us, but hoped Gomez would be the solution. He's got potential & needs game time & top level experience in this respect, but we can't give him time to practice when we only have a Right Back & Centre Back as our only other options.

Perhaps this defeat is the wakeup call we needed. Perhaps now our minds will be fully focused on the three points badly needed on Saturday, over it being the derby against the Rags

There's currently a news blackout in our house, & I daren't even come on Bluemoon last night for fear of an avalanche of hyperbolic reactions. If I had to lose a match this week, it's last night's game.

It's done, it's gone. I'm fuckin gutted, but we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down & get ready to rumble against the Rags in 2 days. We better not fuck up this time!

He spent 4 weeks floating around on a lilo in Qatar and comes back with his derby hanging over his shorts, Pep pulled him on it but then he's back in a City shirt the week after. Rodri preservation is one thing but this kid isn't the answer and wont be even a stone lighter, Id say its people like him who are a bad influence on the team with his shit attitude to his fitness.

Last nights performance was very dissappointing but we've seen this sort of thing previously.
Pep has got to give the fringe players opportunities to show what they have got.
Someone like Philips had a great opportunity but blew it completely.
Cole Palmer has looked good as a sub coming on in games where we have dominated, he had a chance to influence the game from the start and was found wanting.
This was a necessary step, dissappointing as it was.
I felt a bit for Gundo in that first half, he was constantly under pressure without a pass because Philips was hiding. Pep will have noticed stuff like that.
He's not on his own but Philips might be on thin ice.
Cancelo has been poor all year tbh and probably needs a few games back at LB to play himself back to form.
Agree with all of that. I was surprised at how poor Philips was. Totally outplayed by City reject Lavia and Ward Prowse ran everything else. I think Cancelo has been very poor for a long period for us and Portugal.

If Philips doesn't read the room he'll be gone pretty quickly I reckon.

Getting him into the team would be Peps way of sending him a message I reckon... he may of course be too thick to get it.

Philips looked particularly wank. gave it away twice in about 5 seconds for their first goal. still looks miles off it fitness wise.

That was his first start since joining 7 months ago. Absolute disaster of a signing
Whilst everything you say may be correct, if he needed support to bed in last night there was none because everyone was shite.

Agreed use this cup for testing the reserves..yws we need the football combination back.. possibly one or two could occasionally step up a leve. Tony Henry and Ged Keagan style.. kidding oursekves that we have 25 top players . 12 or 13 really top players which is fantastic. We need to stop this BS naarative of a huge squad..its unfair etc..look at net spend past five years...media hate that table
I know but we all love and trust pep, he will deliver.

Activate Lavia's buyback clause, maybe?
