Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Still livid from last night!

The proposed rule ch ages might mean the league cup isn’t a comp we will compete for in future but if we do then a bit of a rethink in terms of how we approach it might be required. For me it’s a good opportunity to blood fringe players but within a framework. Aim to play a different but consistent back 5 in every round, etc. form and injury might not always allow that to happen but I really wonder what good the chop and change approach does, or what Pep learns from it?

I do think we are absolutely spoiled with the football we have been treated to for the past decade though. Thing that irks most about last night was the half arses nature of it all. Very un-City

Don’t lecture us or by offering false praise. Arsenal fans must be loving our fall as it’s opened the door to you lot this season. You will do anything to stay under the radar. If you don’t win it this season against a mediocre city team then you will have missed a trick.

We are favourites for nothing. As for pleasing people, the club is a winning machine and when the bumps in the road come along we can question it without being disrespectful to what we have achieved with Pep. Arsenal fan lecturing City on how to behave towards a manager is funny tho.
exactly one of the most ridiculous, toxic and entitled fan base in the entire world

if I remember correctly, a few seasons ago we put out half a team in this competition when we played the rags at the swamp and effectively threw the tie. This seemed like the same thing happened again. If this competition would have a been a priority the selection would have reflected it. That's not to justify some poor individual performances. I can't imagine the top brass were fuming at 10pm last night. Pep probably more disappointed in how some players performed than the result.
Performance, definitely. When we went out on penalties at West Ham last season, we played reasonably well but just couldn't score. I think our fans were philosophical on the night and reflected on what had been a brilliant run in the competition. Last night was completely different though. It was a wretched performance with the exception of a 10-minute spell where we looked ok after Rodri came on.

I know it’s disappointing losing to Southampton when everyone thought you were nailed on to win but Jesus, there’s some right miserable pessimists on here given you‘re favourites to win the PL, CL and maybe even the FAC. You’re the best team in the league with the best squad and best manager looking down at 18 teams beneath you in the league and you’ve won 4 of the last 5 PL titles. Theres no pleasing some people.
So we should just never complain on a football forum that are football has tailed off big time then?

The performance last night was so poor that I am lost for words to describe it. I am amazed though that we put decent teams out and a great deal of effort into beating Chelsea and Liverpool in the earlier rounds. Why would we do this if we were not really bothered about winning this competition?

I get people's annoyance at loosing this game. But it's a cup game which to be quite frank I'm not too fussed about. I get the worries about the squad but for me it was an off night. I feel like peps getting mins into every players legs since the world cup kind of like you would in a preseason. I feel like some.of them are issues regarding mentally due to the world cup. I also feel like we will come good.

Phillips wasn't great but let's be honest it's the guys first start for a club since may last year. The whole team wasn't cohesive so don't understand why he's getting judged off it. Are we judging gundo and foden too as they weren't any better in that midfield yesterday.

Same as young Gomez their is some rewriting history going on in regards to zinny.

I'm actually more disappointed in the senior first 11 players your walkers, cancelos who let's be honest haven't come back pulling up trees since the world cup. But we seem to scapegoat and immune certain players from recieving criticism.

Like many have said we havent been too great since the world cup and that's on the so called senior first teamers rather than the back ups. I do feel like peps doing some form of pre season with the season having been set in two.

I feel like the performance on Saturday will be totally different I think we need Bernie back in midfield.
Although when Walker played in his actual position on Sunday he was very good

oh without a doubt. I feel the issue with our team has arose since his injury. It isnt coincidence to me that he got injured in the manchester derby in october our performances have gone a bit haywire because prior to that we were great. But just as he comes back fit we have tha cancelo form issue. i feel like once we get our full back cohesion back other players in the squad will fall into place. i think the fullback issue is the reason peps probably tinkering more trying to find the right combination.

We've hardly opened a door for Arsenal they are on target for around a 100 points and would be with or without us. We have had no impact on their point total. If we get 90 points plus and we may well and Arsenal still win it, I don't think they would, then good luck to them.It will be because they have deserved it not because we have opened any doors.

Last nights debacle stemmed from a rotten defence. Walker at centre back with Cancelo and Gomez was always going to be a problem . Add to that Phillips in front left us very vulnerable and unstable. You could see how that affected the whole team. Surely a better plan would have play Walker at RB, Cancelo LB, Akanji CB.
I am getting sick of Guardiola constantly moaning about how tired the players are. They cover about 10-12 km in 90 mins, 5km in Haalands case.
The continuous rotation and introduction of complicated tactics is killing us.
PG is making the job far harder than it needs to be.
The debacle, as you quite rightly label it, stemmed from a dogshit mindset from Pep and the players before the first whistle was blown.
