Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Aside from United, who we were fantastic against for 70 minutes, we haven't played the big boys and we definitely haven't been playing as well as we can. It feels like Pep is trying to work the team out still, and his chopping & changing (Foden hardly playing after a hattrick), hasn't led to great performances. Wins for the most part, but considering the quality of the players, you'd expect it.
And who are the big boys?

For me it's still Rags - beat Chelsea - beat, Arse ? Spuds ?

Geordies are the surprise package and everyone says we were lucky to get away with 3 -3 when really we should have gone 2 nil up which has been forgotten.

Throw in 3 Cup wins against Chelsea and Dippers over the last month.

It's a weird season, not even half way through the League campaign and Cup games every other week which are now accepted as games to rotate in.
The WC has fucked everyone's season up and tbh the crooks at FIFA should have subsidised domestic footy ticket prices for all this fucking about we are having to endure. The situation is being manipulated to get "live footy"on the box every friggen night of the week, no going back and this will become the norm!

I don't think it will settle down until March and onwards to the season end. That is when we will show our metal!

I disagree, actually. Philips reminds me of Rodri when he first started learning from Fern.

It's a big responsibility to come to a top team and just expect to marshall the mid. Cancelo took that role tonight, over Philips.

Philips shouldn't be overawed and needs to grow a pair, like he did at Leeds (see Grealish as well).
I agree with a lot of that, and I really like Philipps, but tonight you could have asked the away end for a volunteer at half time and he would have improved us.

It's a big position to fill as Rodri found with Fernandhino, the difference though is Rodri was Fernandhino's replacement in waiting, Philipps isn't ever replacing Rodri on a regular basis, he's here to give him time off, we'll buy a better player when Rodri is running low on gas imho.

It's his position, not Cancelo's, if they ever play together again.
Far too early to judge Phillips and as you say Rodsers took time to settle

What colour did we play in tonight if people are saying it was a clash with Southampton? They play in red/white don’t they? I understood our third kit is that horrible sickly greeny/yellow with a black sort of stripe?
You couldn’t tell the teams apart on the TV, why play in that horrible strip?

Probably not. My concern is not tonights game. United was the last game i can remember that we destroyed the opposition. The team is struggling in most matches now.

It will either go 1 of 2 ways. Get our shit together or continue to play like crap. We have hit a bump in the road, its not the end of the world after a hughly successful spell. Changes need made to the playing staff. we have not been the same team since we lost fast wingers and Dave. We have also lost legends.

We might need to adjust expectations and accept we have dropped a level or we are genuinely going through a rut and will come out of it at some point. This Saturday would be nice!
So you don’t think the WC has made any difference to our rhythm pre and post WC? The Brentford game was THE game that pissed on our short term chips. Our biggest cock up was sellling Zin IMO , what a balls up that was !
