Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

One positive we can take from tonight is we have avoided two seriously tough games against Newcastle which would have been played the end of January and start of February which is already congested.

I wouldn't think the Gooners are too happy we have been knocked out tonight.
Call my a cynic, but had we got through we'd have had 2 derbies extra.

Over the last 15 league games we have got 2 less points than United.

Based on form and maths as they do not lie are United playing better than us?

Since United were battered by Brentford they have got more points than us.

so the rags are better than us ?

OK.

We're 2nd.

Won our CL group with 2 games to spare.

Beat one of the favorites in the FA Cup, and 2 of the favorites in the CC.

We had a shite night today, because we have a number of big games up coming.

Enjoy your misery, I'm over it, despite that shite first half tonight, but I'm blaming the coach for picking a shite team, he was always going to rotate with a bigger game Saturday, he could have done it better for me, I'm sure the best coach in the world will know.
With respect mate it wasn’t a shite team picked don’t think it’s possible for us to have a shite starting 11 … a shite performance then yes definitely.

I hope Stones is not injured and just left out of the squad to save him for OT. Our only option at left back is Ake. We can't play Cancelo or Gomez. I know it is old hat but why oh why did we not address that position and buy a quality left back. I hope Rashford spends his time on the left wing, at least Walker can match his pace.

Just watched the game on delay which is unusual for me. Wish I'd known not to watch at all as it was one of the most pathetic displays I've ever seen by this supposed group of international superstars. I'd be ashamed to accept pay if I were most of the players on that City side who played. A game like this shows how little lack of heart and grit we have and a complete absence of leadership on the field. Gundo is way too nice and reserved a guy to wear the arm band especially on a night that after about 15 minutes it was clear we need someone who can command respect crack skulls and whom you know essentially will thump you after the game for your shit effort if you don't change it immediately. I am so sick of KDB seeing something not go exactly his way and throwing his arms out with that look on his face than actually doing anything about it. He's not the only one by far. Gomez was piss poor, Cancelo not a lot better nor Walker who I guess along side Phillips gets the "oooh they're coming back from injury they get a pass." Alvarez was absent but so was any service. Palmer sleep walked. Eric had a few moments but mainly due to being forced into last ditch efforts by others who screwed up. Ake was middle of the road but not the worst for sure. Foden basically sat on the left and didn't offer much and honestly felt Jack offered a little more there although still not up to the standard required. That we had to hope Haaland could save us worries me about this year's team... makes it pretty clear our midfield is simply not producing the chances we need.

I'm usually somewhat supportive even in a loss but that was embarrassing. If most of them aren't blaming themselves to a man for absolutely showing up with no heart and being outplayed outmatched and outshined by the bottom club in this league... they're fooling themselves and these elitist "we should win we're superstar athletes- please roll over and let us win with mediocre football" attitudes and performances will continue. There is no excuse and the only response that works or is acceptable is to own it, show up in practice the next day and grind yourself through the paces until you can say you've learned something and earned a spot starting.

so the rags are better than us ?
I was told as a counter argument to me saying we have been shite most of the season that points don't lie.

Based on that, over the last 15 games United have got more points than us. That is a fact so I asked the question to the poster.

I don't follow united, so I don't care, and I'll happily leave you obsess over them.

If we beat them on Saturday they'll have less points than us, in fact even if they beat us, they'll still have less points from the same number of games over the season, and they'll end the season with less points than we will have.

I get that we were shite tonight, but don't see how that is relevant to united any time.

Who played far better for 45 minutes than the team Pep picked.

I'm not trying to paper over it, it was shite.

It was.

In Pep we trust, we've had wobbles before, but this feels different.

The derby will tell us what we need to know, we've always been up for it in the past. The result is important, of course it is, but if we don't put a shift in, regardless of the outcome, then something's wrong.
