Southampton (A) - Post Match Thread

Now the dust has settled, I think we take for granted the standard of football we play. Pep has made us so consistent that anything less than an outstanding performance is considered poor.

On another day, with an identical performance, we win this match 3-1 and everyone is talking about another masterclass.

I still think the club need to stop fucking about though and give Pep whatever striker he desires. We’ve genuinely got a chance to match Pep’s great Barca side and consistency wise in all domestic competitions we’re just as good.

They had the greatest player and scorer of all time which made all the difference in Europe. Messi alone guaranteed that Barca side 30 league goals. Our front three today will be lucky to get 30 between them.

We aren’t going to win every game, even games we are expected to which is most. We’ve come through a number of scrappy games which we may have drawn, today wasn’t one of them. Didn’t lose, fought back and could have comfortably won. I’m normally very critical probably overly but today was just one of them days. Even sterling who frustrates the life out of me, you have to accept he’s going to miss golden chances. His main problem for me is he chooses to miss them in tight games.

We've played far worse than that this season and won comfortably, a lot of our general play was fine but simply not good enough from our front 3, they've cost us that. Sterling abysmal, all his worst qualities on display today, should have been hooked a lot sooner, Jesus at least was threatening when he came on. Foden was dangerous at times when he got on it, by far the most dangerous of our attackers but wasn't on it enough. Grealish was just there, the same as I would do with anybody else playing false 9, I give him some slack because that position doesn't favour anybody but we're still waiting for him to win us a game, never looked like doing anything.

Those wanting to blame var, are looking in the wrong places, all calls were correct.

That's not a point rescued, that's 2 big dropped points. Assume Liverpool win their games in hand, (Leeds and Palace) the gap is down to 6 then, it's 1 loss away from potentially putting it in their hands with us still to play each other. It's a poor result at exactly the wrong time, that's going to reinvigorate the scousers. Week off should re-energise, I expect us to start ruthlessly putting teams to the sword when we're back in action in response to that.
Disagree mate, the two week break will have no bearing on how we restart, it seems to hinder us these long gaps in between games

I get the striker shout but always seems to pop up if we don’t win, which isn’t often. Did we not win because of a striker? Maybe, would we have won the games we have with a striker? Who knows, maybe this system is what works so well for us. Lazy comment the striker stuff though as pep said himself he only gets asked it when we don’t win.

It wasn't a penalty. It wasn't a red card. We drew because we weren't good enough and they were excellent. Not because of VAR.
It certainly was a red, evidenced by his wound, standing foot and it would of been good night Vienna for the season, the studs are high but the action to scrape down says it all…

Pen? Was inconclusive and small margin either way, however certainly a free kick, surely?

I’ll agree on the result but we created enough second half, the application was short!
