Southampton (H) Post Match Thread

We were down for the match yesterday and picked a good one. For the 1st time ever, we were in the Colin Bell stand, 231...bloody hell, comfy padded seats with more room...and less cost than sitting in the Gods in the East Stand...what's that all about? In addition, how busy was the town on Saturday night...what was going on?
Anyway, kudos to the supporters in the East Stand 109 and 110 (?) for making some serious decent noise throughout the match, lot noisier than the chaps behind the goal....its a pity you can't all get together as that would be great to hear.
A very pleasant, mild day with a superb City win. See you all again in March for the Watford game.

Think his passing is criminally underrated on here. His passing between the lines and quick one twos is excellent. That move down the left mid way through the second half was a thing of beauty.

It is his only saving grace and it is said on here often, not underrated in the slightest. It is probably said more in defence of his recent poor games as a positive in it all.

Not sure attacking Mendy's personality is on, especially as it's zero to do with his on field play. I also think suggesting he's Championship level is way off the mark. Let's not forget we've been to Spurs and kept a clean sheet & he was excellent vs Liverpool. He has 5? premier league assists in effectively his first season after 11 games, of which he's missed a couple. Our only defeat and worst performance came in his absence. Delph being at fault for the deciding goal. (Not having a go at Delph, excellent full back).

I think the general tone of his post after a 6-1 victory is way off.
His attitude/personality will affect his on field play IMO,because that is his make up.Like @supercity88 I think if you stick your head above the parapet in life, then you damn well need to be able to back it up otherwise you lead yourself wide open for criticism. The Championship comment is fair because 'at the moment' in his last two games, thats what hes looked like.

Mendy is a quality player and a fine athlete,i'm sure we'll see him back on form soon enough. In the meantime, play Delph.

Mendy is still learning. He changes the way we attack completely and for as good as Delph was last season, how often did he get to the byline and put in those raking crosses that Mendy gives us? His pace means he can recover from so high up the pitch. With Fabian, although defensively more solid, it changed how we attacked last season. He tucked in to the midfield and broke up counter attacks well, but I think we are much more threatening on our left side this season.

Mendy will learn the defensive part of his game the more he plays and understands the system.

Pace?....he was caught ambling back a few times against Spurs and same yesterday. He looks slightly overweight to me, one hell of a "big unit". Southampton worked out that they could play the ball in behind him 2nd half and that caused us problems in the 2nd half. All their good stuff came down his side unfortunately. I don't know, perhaps he is still not fully fit or there is some other reason but he does not look that great defensively at all. I don't think you can have a player in your team that seems so inconsistent, one minute he is fizzing in a superb low cross, the next he is completely miskicking/misjudging a cross at the back.
I'm sure Pep will sort it all out one way or there other though.

I think he's dead right: Mendy is a concern at the moment. He looked back to his best in the first half but this season, overall, he's making too many mistakes. Of course in the scheme of things it's a small complaint, just like the fact that we conceded too many half-chances to Southampton in the second half. But winning easily and playing brilliantly doesn't mean there aren't areas for improvement.

Absolutely. We should always be able to critique and Mendy has unarguably been below par the last couple of league games. It’s just the negative tone of one or two posters, who seem to get pleasure from rounding on someone, even after a 6-1 victory.

Pep does need to work on him though. His errors should largely be curable while his strengths are big assets.

Some outstanding attacking play by all concerned yesterday but we did look a bit suspect defensively and yes Mendy had a lot to do with that. Basic errors and poor positional sense mean he is becoming a target for our opponents. It might be a concentration thing as I thought he an an excellent game defensively against the Dippers but yesterday looked a tad lazy at times and switched off. Overall given the strong start to the season by all the top teams bar the Rags I think the current position is more than we could have hoped for particularly given the fact that KDB has hardly kicked a ball in anger. A win next week effectively ends any challenge from Salford for another year and sends us into the Christmas season well in control of the situation.

Some of our fans want perfection and us to never make any mistakes. I think lots have become entitled and spoilt. Lots aswell struggle to actually enjoy watching us or not having anything to moan about. Some of the best football ever and people are still moaning. It’s bizarre
To be fair, discussion (the main point of the forum) dies a fairly quick death if everyone is expected to just come on here and post praise and accolades all the time. And most that are discussing the potential weaknesses of our performance started off with recognising the exceptional nature of it.

Just because we want to discuss how we can improve doesn’t mean we don’t also understand how good we are, or that we are entitled or spoiled. We’re on a forum to dissect everything City, so we should be doing just that, yeah?

I never said you can’t discuss the game or points from the game did I ? I just don’t understand the moaning. We won 6-1 and a lot of posts on here are complaints and negative.

Right now there isn’t really a lot/anything to complain about and yes it does come across as very entitled.right now I would actually expect mostly praise tbh as we are near enough perfect. But it’s bluemoo so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.

Breathtaking first half hour where I thought we could of been 10 up but we dropped off a little after that. We didn't really do much to deserve the 4th but it came and that was game over. Sterling easily MoTM, Aguero close behind only because Sterling had a part in everything and caused them far more trouble on the ball.

The counter could be a concern next week as fast players can exploit the space when Walker/Mendy push forwards. Mendy seems a bit of a liability defensively but I think that will be ironed out once he settles down.

I think some of the posts come off more negative than they actually are because they are taken in isolation. That is, those posters have already talked about how great we were/are and have moved on to just discussing the potential weaknesses of our performance or current team in the context of the match. It makes sense, as you wouldn’t start every post 20 pages in to the thread with “as I have said several times before today, we were great, however”. The natural progression of discussion means posts in later pages, are going to inherently seem more negative (with a few first time thread posters intermingled with the praise most people started off with in the earlier pages).

I do agree there will always be a few that are very negative, with little in the way of praise shared, but I think those are very much in the minority. And some of them aren’t even blues.

But, back to the thread topic: Did you see how Sane seemed to drive on more after things did not come off for him? In the past he would tend to sulk and drift out of games when he was not influencing things as he would like. Yesterday, though, he just kept plugging away, and eventually got his reward with a well taken goal.

That is a big, maybe more subtle positive I took from the match myself.

Does .. not .. compute.

City going forward we were brilliant yesterday. Yes we took our chances, well most of them. We still should have had another 3 more goals to our target. However if we defend like that against the rags next Sunday we will get hammered.

short memory mate, if we defend like that sun there is every chance of a repeat of the last derby, but in saying that our irresistible forward play providing we take our chances should see us home
Substitute the Rags for the saints yesterday, and you think they would have hammered us?
