Southampton (H) | Post Match Thread

Correct. It's the only way they learn by expressing and sometimes failing.

I also thought Rico looked very good.
Lewis, palmer and Wilson Ed brand all look very good
Alvarez and Gomez looks hungry
Can’t wait for Phillips to get back as well
The way we’re playing at the moment and also the5 sub rule means the fringe players should develop a bit quicker

Ederson, 7 - commanding at catching crosses and distributed it well

Akanji, 8 - looked really solid despite being out of position
Dias, 8 - looked like his usual self, well done to him
Ake, 8 - took a few knocks today but kept getting back up and kept moving the ball well
Cancelo, 9 - dangerous all afternoon and scored an excellent goal

Rodri, 8 - really classy as always
De Bruyne, 7 - looked a bit rusty in patches but provided that pass to Foden
Bernardo, 7 - faded into the background a bit today but was always busy

Mahrez, 6 - took his goal well but was otherwise our weakest player
Haaland, 8 - always a threat, getting more involved in our play, took his goal well
Foden, 9 - my personal man of the match, was excellent throughout

Man are we a great team or what. Southampton clearly did everything to stop Haaland to score which they actually did well but not well enough :-) But that took 2 CH to cover him so it left gaps for our other players to do their magic. Thought Cancelo played really well as did Foden and Rodri. Defence was really solid, like the 3 ch defence in matches like this. Akanji is growing on me, he played walkers role like he was born to play there. Ake and diaz very solid.
Bernardo is still one of my favorite players. He is just so so good. De bruyne was kind of in 1st gear all match but he doesnt have to do more to still affect the game

I feel like I just have no clue who would be first choice center back anymore.. there’s an argument for any of them, they’re all incredible! Any of them is better than almost any other center back in the league

Be interesting to ask Pep how this team compares to his great Barca side with Xavi , Messi , Iniesta etc., i have watched both live and there is very little between them , the individual brilliance of Messi is probably the only difference.
Teams were always wary of coming to the Etihad but now we have added Haaland the opposition are shitting themselves , Southampton played some decent stuff but were just battered into submission by a relentless team of exceptional footballers.
I think it's similar between Valdes and Ederson, our defense is better (sure Alves and Puyol are better than ours, but ours is more complete and flexible). Even with Messi I think our offensive with Haaland is better. I think the big difference is Xavi and Iniesta to be honest. They have been the best duo of all time IMO, and even if Rodri-KDB- Silva are brilliant, only KDB have any shot of getting closer to being an all-time great (I mean top 50 in history), and both Xavi and Iniesta are easily in the top 40 all time players dominating possession.

At the end, we need to win the UCL with 1 or 2 dominating matches (like Barca- United, or Barca-Madrid or Barca-Bayern in those years) to be remembered as a top 5 team in history. By the way we play and dominate I know we are, but that's not how history is written.

…and if you should pull that off, I for one will applaud you because you play beautiful football.
I appreciate this sort of comment, but we've only played United from """"big size""""©. We rarely win at Anfield, all it takes is one bad day at the office, a couple of injuries, or a packed schedule. Lots and lots and lots of football left to play.
