Southampton post match thread

Did you see the aggression from spurs and chelsea tonight either of those teams would have blown us of the park playing with that aggression and intensity. when did our team of warriors vanish. toure kompany, zabaletta, lescott, barry, tevez, de jong, bellamy.

Did they disappear with our last manager.

Most signed by Mark Hughes.

Otamendi has tattoos though.

This is spot on, it's not the resting players, I think everyone understands that it's the fact he won't say ok let's keep this solid stay in the game and try and sneak a win or a draw
That's why I can't hand him the injuries excuse, yep theyre injured so I'm afraid you can't play this fantasy football of all out attack today and win 4-0, make us solid hard to beat and get the ball to the ones on the pitch who can get us a goal as 1-0 will do today
You know all those millions you get paid to manage ? Well FUCKING MANAGE

People excusing him, also give the impression that this situation is one which is suddenly dumped on him without warning & nothing could have been done to lessen the impact.

Right at the start of the season I was having arguments on several threads related to using young players to strengthen the squad. 'They have to earn their chance, we can't have favouritism' or 'the club doesn't think they are good enough' and 'you can't risk kids at this level' were the typical arguments from people with no idea nor interest in the subject allied with gangs of disciples of Pellegrini.
I haven't let this lie all season, because I know from years of watching youth football, that these arguments are a load of old bollocks & that the manager was putting the team at risk, as we actually need a few kids to make the squad work & I've seen this coming. I predicted the Champs Lg situation where one of Nasri or Kelechi misses out, because of Demifuckingchelis being preferred to a homegrown young player.

Using young players to fill holes when shit happens through injuries & also to add enthusiasm, workrate & energy, is how almost all the top sides have done it over the years. It's just that Mourinho & Chelsea have got away without it, so some short sighted people think that's how it's done.

It's understandable that a collection of people on here repeat soundbites from tv 'experts' saying that it's too much of a risk, but a manager with Pellegrini's experience should know better. What happens when the games kick in & we pick up a few injuries ? He throws a bunch of kids in, untried, all at the same time, & tosses off the FA Cup. But the worst players on the day ? Not the kids. The same people who have fucked up on so many other occasions, fucked up in the cup. But has that persuaded him to use a few more young players off the bench since ? Has it fuck.

Kolarov was there though. At Southampton. Ok to trust him.

I think football is a sport, with all that entails. The science here is very clear: three days is only enough for 80% recovery.

I will repeat just once more that I was not in favour of forfeiting the Southampton match and I certainly believe that the team selected should have been capable of gaining a positive result there. There's plenty of debate on here discussing factors other than team selection but I am only commenting on that point.

Playing a weaker side was a risk but playing a side full of players expecting to feature on Wednesday may have seen a heads elsewhere, don't want to get injured performance (it wouldn't be a first). We don't know what would have happend; just as we do not know what might have happened if Sterling (a regular up until his injury) had given City the lead. We do know what the recovery times are for players and we do know that Madrid had an extra day and rested five players ( was it?). In the circumstances and with the risks and rewards involved, rotation was a reasonable decision in my opinion and that won't change.

Rotation can be planned & managed.

This guy can't be arsed doing either. If it had been a league cup semi final, delayed for some reason til now & he saw the chance to get himself a medal, most, if not all would have played irrespective.

We had to rotate. Kun was dead on his feet against Madrid and had to be rested and it was wise to rest some others. The manager was poor imo in so far as the tactics rather than the personnel was the problem. Not sure Bony should have started and another body in midfield together with a cohesive defensive display may have been enough to get something given that we scored two goals. As pointed out continually in recent weeks this is nothing new and the manager has prepared the team poorly on multiple occasions in the league this campaign. This has led to a situation that we are in danger of not finishing in the CL places. It is perhaps unfair but his legacy at city to a large extent is likely to be defined by the next two games. Two wins and he will leave a hero two defeats and he will receive a somewhat subdued send off next Sunday.

Bony certainly hasn't panned out, but I must say that Iheanacho works very well with Bony. Bony makes space, passes the ball, meanwhile Sterling and Aguero hog the ball. Notice that Iheanacho seems that much more effective whenever coupled with Bony, Aguero seems to stifle him as the top dog. A player of the Bony mold makes Iheanacho work, Aguero meanwhile is both Man City's biggest weapon and can be our biggest weakness, because he cut offs many alternatives. The less said about Sterling the better...

All in all I would much prefer Bony over Sterling, who hasn't gotten anywhere near the criticism, but has been very much at fault for the Blue lack of effectiveness.

Maybe a 4-3-3 might work with Aguero and Iheanacho coming off the wings and Bony up front laying off the ball?

Oh and take a look at the team Pep fielded for Bayern on Saturday in a game that could have sealed the title for them cos you are going to find Pep very disrespectful.

The situation is different. Bayern needed one win out of 3 matches. It would have been nice to get that win on Saturday - but not obligatory. The next match is an away match against Ingolstadt and the last against already relegated Hannover at home.

And Bayern only has 6 days between the matches as they play Wednesday-Tuesday and not Tuesday-Wednesday.
