Southampton post match thread

ridiculous to field the team we did Sunday, jeopardise next season for a CL semi final is not good management. To put a side out that wasnt even capable of keeping a nil nil draw was plain stupidity.

It is very important that we qualify for CL next season and give Guardiola a running start, far more important than a half chance at CL final.

Tactics management wrong !!

I dont get this argument? Why is it more important to finish top 4 so we are in the Champs Lg next season then it is to try to win it this year when we have a very good chance of doing so? Is it player acquisition? Money? There is no guarantee that we will ever get a better opportunity to win it.

I think deep down, nobody sees us winning it.

I do. And I've had this feeling for sometime. We could have been going to Madrid with an advantage had we not replaced Silva with Iheanacho, but 0-0 it is.

However, I think the players available to Pellegrini were enough to get something out of the Southampton match. Our failures that day came down to our tactical set up meaning we were up against it from the moment the players crossed the white line. It was a match which we needed a result from, but yet again Pellegrini did us no favours.

What about the players? If some weren't up for it, we have more than enough in reserve and in the EDS who could have made a difference.

That's a great post! I find this funny with English teams in the Europa as well. Good on Klopp and Manuel for both deciding to prioritise Europe. Klopp because he wants to win the Europa and because of the extra incentive with the CL place. We're obsessed with this top 4, CL qualification malarkey. It's nonsense. A big side is a side that wins it. Arsenal have been in it for donkeys years, who have they bought because of the CL? And who have they bought simply thanks to being a London team that's known to be a decent side? The money from the CL is of course excellent, but we can balance that by winning it and marketing the hell out of the club off the back of it. It doesn't matter if we're in it or not if we've won it! No team has managed to win it back to back anyway!

We're one game away from the final. We don't even have to win tomorrow and we're in the final. We don't even have to win the final to win the competition. I'd rather not throw away the chance of making the final by pushing for top 4 in the league. We're still capable of finishing fourth and Pellegrini will not have anticipated such a poor performance, particularly defensively. That side wasn't a side that should be shipping 4 goals. Kolarov and Zabba have plenty of experience. Otamendi and Mangala have been improved in recent times and Delph and Fernandinho are both midfielders with extensive prem experience. That was unacceptable.

If we finish this season having made the final of the CL we'll all be buzzing and whilst we might be gutted we aren't in it again, if we win it we won't care! Leicester won't give a toss about winning another trophy after this season. The high will stay for decades. The same applies if we win the CL. Chelsea will easily cope without CL. Liverpool are still living off the back of success in the CL over their history. Financially we can cope without. I think we'll make the CL final, whether we win it or not I don't know! But I think we'll also qualify for the CL in any case.

And this is the problem. Pellegrini clearly doesn't trust them. It is the reason Kolorov got a game 10 days after his last utterly abysmal performance

i hope your backing for this insanely stupid fucking gamble pays off and doesnt put our progress back or stops it dead in its tracks.

i fear this stupidity will not result in either top 4 or champions league final never mind winning it.

proof of the pudding as they say,

i hope you and pelligrini are proved right i really do

I don’t think it was the selection that was the problem. The team that was picked was 11 decent players all playing in their favoured positions. On top form that team was comfortably good enough to win that game. What was wrong was the lack of form and fitness from these players and the general lethargy within the performance. I think it is a combination of management failings and player failings. There were players on that pitch that had no excuse for not being ultra, sharp and grasping the opportunity to make a point for various reasons – only Nacho did. It is only Sterling that is recently back from injury – all the rest have been fit for weeks.

What progress? Finishing in the top 4 for what purpose if we dont try to win it when we can....I must be dim.

And the likelihood is that we will lose tomorrow and may miss out on top 4-but it doesnt make the decision on Sunday wrong.
