Southampton Vs City Post Match Discussion Thread

Disappointing. We were brilliant for the first 30 mns. Were unlucky not to be up 3-0. Brilliant goal from Osvaldo, felt MD and other did a poor job of closing him down leaving Vinnie on his own to defend. Made it as hard as humanly possible and he still scored. Tip my cap to him. 2nd half we were mostly poor with a few good moments. Gave the ball away way too easily. Didn't handle the high pressure well at all. Panicked and continually passed back to the keeper to lump it forward and give it right back to Southampton. MD was abysmal. Don't get why he is playing at LCH instead of Lescott. He's supposed to be good on the ball but he was the worst of all in giving the ball away. Instead of making the easy pass to relieve the pressure he kept hoofing it forward which resulted in giving them possession time after time. Killed any hope of building up any momentum. Fernandinho was pretty disappointing. Gave the ball away and didn't effect the game. Nasri was good in the first and invisable in the second, same with Kolorov. Yaya was pretty poor in the second similar to Dinho but totally disinterested in defending. Thought bringing on Garcia was a huge mistake. He's poor on the ball and slows down the attack. Not the player to bring into a game where the opposition is pressing high up the pitch.

still aint clinical enough...........his goal ratio to chances is poor....

Yeah but what do you call a chance ? that one he had to aim high. Watch it again and there are a few defenders between
him and the goal.

if any of this added up, which it doesn't, we would've been swamped. Southampton barely had a chance in the second half. A bit more balance will keep us all a lot saner in what's likely to be a tight and tense season. All to play for. Good point today.

And, btw, we never deserved to be 3 up.

Yes high in to row Z. He should have buried that be real mate.

The result exceeded my expectations. I thought we would lose for sure. We simply are not good enough yet to dominate game in, game out. We are a great team, obviously and sometime next year, we will become a completely dominant force.

No, Everton will not get points off of Arsenal. Gunners will run away with the title this year. They are simply better than anyone else. And that is the way it should be - they are the only high quality side from last year which just continued to improve and build on what they had last year. Us, Man Utd, Chelsea, Tottenham had a lot of changes and/or a coaching change. There is some value in consistency...

We are doing good and will most likely come in 2nd. Good fight tonight at a tough opposing ground.

Well said, exactly my thoughts also.

Wenger has 15 years experience in the prem, worth it's weight in gold (unless you are the chosen one)!

People are getting carried away by Arsenal just wait and see how things pan out there is still a lot of football to be played
Agreed. Besides we have our magician returning against them next weekend. Lets see how they handle Merlin. I actually think that we have coped well considering he is very close to being our best player.

In relation to last nights game, there are a number of ways of looking at it. It was an improvement on last seasons debacle. In the context of what will probably be a long and close season the point might prove to be invaluable. Also I don't think Nasri was quite as sharp as he has been he has been in the past few games. That made a difference.

I also think that there is a persuasive case to adopt 4-2-3-1 for many of the away games. Playing Kun and Alvaro up top in a 4-4-2 formation led to us being swamped in midfield. At stages they seemed to have more players on the park than us. I hope MP does adapt. He did so in the Chelsea game and it worked effectively. It's simply the case that on occasions we need the extra body in midfield.

Prior to the game their Manager said they were going to press us high up the park and swamp the midfield. It seems that we remain vulnerable to this while we continue to play 2 strikers.

I remain a fan of MP. I have seen sublime football played by this team this season, even better than the Championship season. If we don't sort out some of the issues about formation this season for one reason or another, you can bet we will be an even better team next season, once Txiki works his magic in the transfer market again.

While Arsenal may be the best team in the league this year, I still feel they're not being pushed enough. If we can beat them next weekend, I can see us making a right fist of this if we can just iron out a few things.

If you had asked me at this time yesterday if a point at Southampton was acceptable, I would have said no. However, having played as poorly as we did for most of the game and with Southampton treating it like a cup final, we'll take the point and move on.

One thing that worries me is I don't think we're being taken seriously in this title race. We haven't announced ourselves as serious contenders. Had we won yesterday (with Chelsea losing), it would have given Arsenal something to really think about with their trip to our place on the horizon. Instead we find ourselves in the middle of that annoying pack of four or five teams that keep rotating the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots. We need a run of 6 or 7 wins and that must start next Saturday, no questions asked.
