Four thoughts from that game:
1) Rust Was Expected. Seriously, let's not panic. I think the Community Shield result plus the fact that our rivals won have put a feeling of great importance on this match that's over-riding the fact that a certain lack of game fitness, game mentality, and overall fluidity between the players was expected. Aye, it was a shite performance, but I was primed and ready for that if I'm honest. Give it a week, and the real City will be back in action.
2) Mendy Has to Go. Now, I'm always reticent to flat-out say that a player isn't good enough. But watching Mendy trying to bomb up and down the wings is like watching a bulldog attempt gymnastics. For every good cross, he slaps a ball right into a defender's thigh, he rarely throws in a belter of a tackle in the way the others can, and his game intelligence is as smart as Helen Flanagan. He's just not City level. Whether that's down to injuries, I don't know. But if he's not ready when he's fit and has had a run of games, then he's not ready. A converted midfielder will rightly be benching him every week.
3) Grealish Looked Class. Man, what a natural mover with the ball. I said before he arrived that his greatest asset will be his ability to get us up the pitch so regularly while losing possession so few times. He won fouls, he got in the box, he made things happen, and he didn't start counters. I like Pep's idea of having him in mid-field and letting him drift out to the left while the winger moves inside - it was a bit messy with Sterling, but I think Foden will thrive playing around that. The only downside is how much it isolated Gundo, but again, Foden will be a lot more adept at getting into that mid-field area than Raz.
4) We Need Kane. It's not even that there was a few chances that I think he would have buried (there were), but having a player like Kane on the pitch, a clear target with passing ability to play around, makes you feel like a goal is always on the cards. There's such a psychological boost to a player like that being in the box, even forgetting his obvious skill. It's like how Ruben gave us a feeling of solidarity in defence - it's not just what he does, it's how he commands an end of the pitch and improves the players around him. Our fluid system is great when we're firing, but when we're not things begin to feel untethered and loose, we force it or drop off too much, and a presence like Kane would help that a lot, I think.
So, yeah. A bit of a shiter. But get the big boys back training together, hopefully bring in Kane, hopefully never have to play Mendy again in the league, and I think we'll be back on form before you know it. We'll win things this season, don't worry.
