The week "off" has done wonders for the players. Looked fitter, sharper, keener and tactically far superior than even the Madrid game.
The Back 3/5 still needs some work, because the ball through the line is killing us. Can't just ignore a ball past you and rely on the player in behind to clean up for you. We have done that in both the past two games now.
Th chances we are creating are phenomenal. The misses they are creating must be infuriating to Pep. Too many "in the box" passes, especially the pull back to the penalty spot when a shot to the far post is on. KDB may never pass to Jesus one on one again! I know I'd think twice! ;-)
The ball into the top man (sitting on the back line) has become the sign for one of the greyhounds to set off for the gap between the defenders. Then, when that ball gets knocked back, it is immediately slid through their back line to the advancing runner....like a hot knife through butter.
In short, a defence splitting 1-2-3 that was done to perfection numerous times. With the speed on offer from our forwards, it is exciting to watch! Was amazing that players who struggled against a strong defensive back line last season absolutely cut it to ribbons today! Even the subs were looking for that ball today, so you know the squad have been working on it this week.
One weakness I've seen is the crossfield pass in between the two defenders on the other side, for the wide man cutting in. We are getting a bit caught ball watching rather than seeing, or anticipating, the run. It has th effect of shredding the offside trap if anyone of the back 3/5 are not exactly in line and checking their six.
Nasri looks like the world class player he could be with a little discipline. He is an excellent replacement for either of the Silvia's and if a squad position can be found for him it should be. Injuries are the only thing that looks like it might blunt the obvious improvements this squad has made, and he might win us that one game that makes the difference. He is absolute quality when he is on his game (as he was today), but you just never know what you're going to get over the entire season (weight, mouth, pouting, etc...) and I know Pep has no time for anyone who isn't 100% onboard with HIS plans or the right character. In the end, I think that will be his downfall, not the quality of his game.
Diaz looks like he has some skills. Unfortunately, acts like a twat when he scores a goal. What's with the kids today and all the "look at what a twat I am?" when they score? Obviously, nothing to do with his game, but an annoyance. He isn't Ronaldo, he is a young kid with a future. Why not let your skill and goals do the talking for you and not act like "the big 'I am'"? Don't get it!
As for the quality of the football after a couple of hours of playing pre-season?
Oh my...
