Star Wars: Rogue One

It's ok fella. Sorry for the sarcasm. I actually liked the casting and the story lines but was dispapointed that the finale was so drawn out and ultimately low key.

I understand that, but contrast it with what Disney wanted; a comedy heist.

A.

COMEDY.

HEIST.

Let that sink in a mo...

Ultimately, that would have meant all the main players survived for another jolly jaunt. I'm so stoked Edwards won as much of the battle as he did. He HAD to compromise or walk away.

Ha, ha - typical but I didn't misspell, iPads for ya, although my proofreading was crap.

You did have a point about characterisation but it isn't that kind of movie and much of what you wrote misses the point: the movie is a crowd pleaser.

I don't think I missed the point. I've admitted that there is a lot of fan service in the film. And fan service in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing, if it is balanced by a good story, good characters and good dialogue. Much like action sequences and CGI are only good if they complement the story.

I do concede that the movie that we saw was obviously not what was intended - that is born out of the fact that the trailers showcased dialogue that didn't make the final cut. Pretty much most of the dialogue from the following trailer did not make it into the film. And clearly by it's content it would have fleshed out Jyn's story a lot more. You can only presume that as Forrest Whitaker has a shaved head in it that he was talking to a younger Jyn.

But instead it was cut. In its place we had multiple shots of the sentry on Yavin, and other cameos and easter eggs. Get the story and characters right and I don't worry about these things.

I've always wanted to see Vader going nuts on people and I don't want it over done but fucking hell that hallway scene has left me wanting more.a Han Solo spin off without Harrison Ford is fucking daft, maybe a Vader hunting down the remainding Jedi? Although I understand over doing Vader will ruin his character.

The last 20 minutes of Rogue One will go down in history I think as the 2nd greatest moment in Star Wars history. Having thought about it the twist at Empire strikes Back "I am your father" cannot be beaten.

I loved Rogue One so much more than Force Awakens. I really don't think we needed anything after Return of The Jedi but hopefully I'll be proved wrong. The death planet idea was a fucking stupid one though.

The only thing I wanted to be in the film that didn't make it was Jynn walking up to the Tie Fighter on the transmission gantry. Yeah it still might've been taken out by an X-Wing rather than her shooting it with a blaster (which would be a bit silly and maybe the reason it was cut).

Agree with this.

I thought in R1, his first appearance was slightly odd, he seems more human than ever, with his 'don't choke' quip. But his appearance at the end was sensational and everything you'd want from Vader, mysterious, sinister and fucking evil as fuck.

Hard to know how different the movie was to any original intentions: pretty much all major movies end up shooting more than they (can) use. I don't delve into the making of stuff much these days: the days of reading Cinefx were a long long time ago. Whether stuff was left out simply to keep the movie's time down or to change the tone, I have no idea but I don't think more backstory etc was really needed to make the movie successful: although I would happily have sat through more but I like long movies. My (just) 16 year old daughters did comment on the way home that they (the Star Wars folks) like to make long movies so the target market may well be a limiting factor. FWIW, I didn't think all the shots of sentries were necessary but, generally, I like the fan service, being a fan 'n' all.

On first viewing, I thought the balance between action and exposition was OK. I can't say that the characters themselves moved me but I'm not sure learning more about than or better dialogue would have changed that.

It's funny, but after avoiding all talk of RO in between my input on this thread, I'd actually forgotten about that RO sequence that they put out. That was in summer before the whole re-shoot, wasn't it? I remember feeling quite hopeful and whilst the film didn't suck Donkey Balls Abhrams style, it's further evidence of Disney meddling, that ends up in a halfway house. I don't think we'll ever see Edwards' intention for RO unless he leaks his version! I would think it's far superior, but far too scary for the Disney execs!

As for 'over doing Vader', as per an earlier post, I would love to see Yoda's experience up against him and that may yet happen as there is a Yoda stand alone film being mooted.
