Sterling’s contract - three year extension confirmed

Can't help but feel like how ever much he improves in the future most people will always talk about him with a certain disregard to his ability. He scored 18 goals in statistically the best side in PL history last season and he's still no where near to getting the credit he deserves.
If he had moved to us and there wasn't the hate campaign by the media and pundits he would get the credit,it's like it's totally sunk into peoples heads that he is not good enough because everyone at every ground boo him,mp ruined his first season as he took away all his flair so you can write off that season,he has flourished under pep,he is now full of confidence and scoring and assisting,he has come along nicely, watch england sap his confidence as usual, hate them for that

Totally agree. But the "why doesn't he play for England like he does for City" brigade on Twitter do nothing but betray they have no clue about tactics or formations. He isn't playing the same role - he's most unlikely to skin the full back time and again!
When it comes to Sterling, rational thinking goes out of the window. If there's an opportunity to have a go at him, people will take it. Like his fall against Shakhtar. He didn't dive, didn't ask for the penalty, and admitted after the game that it wasn't a penalty. Hardly anyone took those things into consideration though. He's just labelled a cheat and a diver

The initial hate campaign that he had endure is still so baffling. So many people ate it up and it certainly hindered his confidence. Actually feel sorry for the guy. He doesn't appear to have an ego, he comes across as pretty humble in interviews and he gets so much undeserved criticism thrown his way it's bizarre.

For you the England team means nothing - your sentiment isn't universal.

For City, yes, he absolutely lacks a bit of confidence. He still tends to pass rather than shoot when shooting is the better option.
How so? Probably Southgate hasn't given Sterling anything like the support he has at City.

Yet... if Sterling were supremely confident - why would this matter?

Edit - Note that I think that Sterling has the raw ability to be a Balon Dior candidate/winner - for me, it's an issue of confidence that's holding him back.

Meanwhile, retaining his current excellent level in our squad - will ensure that he's among the very best wingers - if not the best winger - in world football.
Sterling seems to do what he is told to the letter.
Pep wants the ball to be given to the player most likely to score, you could argue that confidence plays a part in this, you could say the same of Spanish Dave. They want to pass first, as that’s what they do, always done and will continue to do.
If it’s a one touch finish, shoot, if not pass. Is probably what they are being told.
On top of that, don’t waste possession needlessly.
It might come across as lack of confidence but I think we play percentages as Hansen would say.

Yeah, for England under Southgate Sterling had a lot of work to do in the middle. For the longest time it was the wrong role for him, largely because he'd never played so deep and in the thick of it before. For City it was a lot about what he did without the ball that mattered, which obviously in our team of superstars isn't a big deal. But for England the onus to do things with the ball was put upon him. Ultimately too much was expected from him.

Funnily enough, it's starting to become the right role for him. His development under Pep has actually meant he's becoming the player Southgate thinks he is. He's become far more involved in general play and his technique is starting to flourish.

His goal against Shakhtar was what Southgate was trying to get out of him. That ability to turn and run in a crowded midfield area at that pace is very rare in football. Actually, the fact he could do that was the reason why at the World Cup he was always so heavily marked despite apparently never delivering. Because if Southgate was right about him then he could have been an absolute monster for England; and England's opposition, Southgate, and City (but not England or its media) knew it.

In theory, he should slowly become England's main man over the next few years. I don't particularly care if he does or not, but it'd be nice for him to achieve the success in his performances that he deserves.
