Sterling and the hate he gets

You need a good one first, you need a good start. Can’t rely on them taking the 5th, it might not even go to 5 penalties and you’ve wasted your best taker.
Well when City beat dippers on pens in the league cup final, our best penalty taker Yaya was 4th or 5th if I remember, his penalty won it anyway, no correct way is what I’m saying, it’s just preference.

Since the 2018 world cup they've kept a league table of who is best at penalties from every single practice and match the England squad plays. We know that for certain. It's been reported they based last nights list of 5 on that league table.

I expect what happened is Saka got picked because he was high up the league table among the squad. You can see in the video going round, Southgate is dithering on the last taker, probably because he didn't want to pick such a young kid, but in the end as is very typical for this England side, they trusted the numbers.

5th is the best place to put him also. A lot of shootouts don't get to the 10th penalty.
Doing practices as part of training and knowing your best penalty takers in advance and then getting them on the pitch seems as smart a way as any to pick your five as any other way of doing it. As with much modern football, it's about controlling what you can control. If Sterling isn't part of that five then he clearly brings lot of other qualities to the side. The thing is that once you're in a shootout it's a lottery. I feel sorry for the all the lads who missed, but it happens, as we saw with Kane who is normally pretty clinical, and there is nothing Southgate or anyone else could do about it.

Yaya was 4th after Dinho, Navas and Kun, seem to remember Bony was due to take the 5th but Caballero made sure he didnt need to.

Reminds me of when Nicky Weaver said he had to save Gillinghams 4th penalty in the play off final because he knew The Goat was due to take our next one!
Loved The Goat (obviously) and he scored shit loads for us.Think he may have scored a couple from the spot for us(not sure?) but don't think I'd have had total confidence in him taking one that day.
He had some grief from the fans initially didn't he!
Personally don't believe there was any real vitriol or a racial element like with Sterling. With Goater, i just think it was us blues mistakenly probably thoinking he was just another shit player joining our really shit team at the time!! (proved us wrong didn't he!)

His run up makes him look a right dick.
If your going to ballet dance approaching the ball, make sure you hit the target.

His whole approach with where he stands before the ref blows his whistle, then taking a few steps to left, before that run up is a copied from Neymar.

IF Raz didn’t put his hand up to take one (which looks unlikely) I think his conversion rate is less than 50% so isn’t that a smart move?

It happened to the Yorkshire clogger at Wembley in 2016.

Hevwas probably Littlewoods' best penalty taker at the time, but because of Big Willy's saves and Yaya' spot-kick, he never got to take his.

Agree, it took Goater at least 12 months to start winning the fans over. Started the season well a division above and never looked back, although he had plenty of doubters who didnt see him succeeding in the 2nd tier. Dont remember him taking many pens for us which makes his goalscoring record even more impressive. 98-2001 Horlock was probably our main pen taker.

I remember The Goat telling it the other way around at a Supporters' Club branch meeting in September '99, I.e. Nicky saved because he knew I was next.
