Storm Babet

In weather pattern terms, 8 years is nothing.

The main problem is poor / ineffective planning by local councils. Building houses near rivers means an increased risk of localised flooding. It's common sense to ensure that (preferably over) adequate flood defences are in place, particularly where there's a history of floods in an area, as in this case. Penny pinching causes more problems than the weather.

We're living in the 21st century, not the 17th.
However you want to down play it, it’s a storm that’s going to affect whole communities.

I doubt these communities are currently discussing whether it is classed as a storm or not.

That’s down to fuddyduddies on the internet who like to reminisce about how bad the weather was when they were a lad and the snowflake society that naming weather has caused.

Communities are affected every year by bad weather. Storms or not, the problem is exacerbated by local governments failing to address often very obvious problems.

It's probably cheaper for local authorities to shift a few people into temporary/safe accommodation for a few days than it is to provide long term solutions.

The weather is just weather. Any failure is down to humans.

I guess you don’t bother with forecasts at all then as you can adapt whatever is thrown at you. After all, it‘d just be human error if anything happened to you. You should have known that that tree was going to land on your car as you’re driving home.

Weather forecasting has changed. Back in your day, you’d see a forecast once a day, one that was far less accurate than the ones we can access 24/7 in this technological age.

Whilst I have some sympathy with you argument about long term solutions, where storms land is largely random and flash flooding can happen from Land’s end to John O’Groats, so money invested is largely reactive to previous storms.

Humans can’t be prepared for every type of weather without unlimited funding.

or as my mum would say ' it's a bit nippy outside, zip up '.
Mine when she ran out of fags when the rain was pissing down, literally fucking bouncing off the streets and kids could still buy fags.

“you’ll be fine, the rain isn’t that heavy. Put your hood up.”

To be fair, if our streets were rivers of molten lava and she was out of fags, she would have sent me out with my platforms on with instructions to run very fast so as not to melt your soles. You’ll be fine, you’re a fast runner, won that medal.

I've been there, actually been to both Middleton and Midleton. Lovely people. Hope everyone is ok. :-)
Seriously though. One month’s rain in one day. Call it whatever you like, I don’t care. The fact is the flash flooding was devastating.

Business’ on the Main Street flood barricading themselves and customers in as best they could but front windows crashed in from the rising water.

Something similar happened back in 2015 and they can’t get flood insurance.

It would be heartbreaking.

But yeah it’s just a bit damp out, why call it a storm.

Yellow rain warning again tonight for the area.
