Stuart Brennan. MEN.

I feel like I may be in a minority here, but I'm still not quite sure what has caused such offence in the original article.

There were a few typos which doesn't reflect especially well on them, but it's hardly the most heinous crime and fair play to Brennan for coming on to at least discuss it.

The paranoia about the MEN having any kind of agenda against us is nonsense though. They're obviously outside the circle now in terms of getting scoops, but compared to some of the national press we generally get a positive slant on City. Which is understandable and obvious. Alienating half of their readership would be absurd.

Some seem a bit too sensitive and trot out the lazy cliche of the MUEN, citing occasional headlines as evidence. I'm sure on United forums they probably see a perceived injustice too.

If you're genuinely offended by the "10 goal bonanza" headline then I despair.

Don't think he'll be coming back after that last lot of posts
Hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa,
SB has the balls to come on here to defend himself and yet you claim he aint.!!!!!!!
Hahhah. What a fooking arsehole.

Tbf, he hasn't answered the most awkward questions, and while I respect him for coming on here to defend himself, some of his answers are disrespectful at the very least.
I know you're a fan of the MEN, and I accept that some of the criticism thrown at him and his employers on here is largely unjustified and bordering on paranoia, but some of it is well justified and spot on. If SB can't see this, then he is just as bad as the people that you are so quick to criticise.

I agree with almost every word but,

"alienating half their readership" ? Don't you know that the City is ours Ric !

Tip of the Iceberg Ed, just another reason why the MEN and its journalists are so poor. I get my City fix and all my City news from Bluemoon and the Official website. I'd pick up a copy of Autotrader in search of a decent unbiased story about City before I reached for the MEN, which lets not forget is supposed to be a local newspaper promoting local interest.

You won't get unbiased City news from the Official website...

Recently, I was fortunate enough to join Simon Curtis as one of the City writers on ESPN FC and have been sending in articles since the summer. I've never met the editor, nor any of the sub-editors. I write the words of my article and email it in - then somebody subs it and makes any changes necessary (correcting spellings I've missed, adhering to their style guide, making clunky sentences less so, etc). After that, they write a headline, they find a suitable picture and then caption it, before posting the whole thing and then tweeting it.

The by-line is mine, but all a by-line does is say that the words were originally written by this person - not that everything that appears on the site is down to them. I have no control over pictures, no control over captions, no control over headlines/sub headlines. Neither does Stuart in the MEN - I'd be surprised if his process is that much different.

To suggest he - or I - would be entirely responsible for everything on that page is bizarre. It's impossible for that to be the case.

Things get missed in the editing process, especially when up against a 'must get this out as quickly as possible deadline'. In fact, when I wrote my first City book, my editor for that constantly moaned that I couldn't decide how to spell Stephen Ireland's first name - something I'd missed when editing it. My guy had a fortnight to edit the book. Newspaper editors have *a bit* less.

Once Brennan answered that the captions aren't written by him, what was the point of abusing him further? Individuals should only have to answer for their own work, not the work of others.

The Guardian should have found some way to poach Stu instead of that obnoxious Jamie Jackson.

You have to be taking the piss?

You defend that headline as being a story outlining the day's happenings, that really is unreal.

We scored 7 and the scum scored 3 and you think "Ten-goal bonanza" is an un-biased headline....

You really couldn't make it up.

I don't think it's a great headline, but the website people need to get stuff up quickly. If you had to write a short headline which covered the main Manchester football events of that day, what would it be, out of interest?

Reds use the M.E.N in the argument "is Manchester more blue or red?" By saying that Manchester's main newspaper prefers them. I've had that said to me on a few occasions so it isn't just crazy City fans..

Do they? I have never heard a single Red use that argument, and I have lived my whole life in and around them, including 95 per cent of my family.
However, I have heard, on a million occasions, Utd fans berating us for being pro-City and anti-United.
Have you ever considered the idea that perhaps both you and they are suffering from the same affliction, that you only see the stuff that backs up your opinion?

Not sure I can get my head around that comment from Stuart. Is it really true that if the readers by a publication which contains a lot of drivel then it's the readers fault.

TV is another example though I suppose. There is so much garbage on there under the reality show heading which seems to appeal to a lot of folk but it really is garbage.

Same argument. Do you think TV companies put on the X factor, or Big Brother, or any of the rest of the shite, to shape people's lives, or do you think they simply provide what the masses want?
Unfortunately, soaps and reality TV are big draws, and so bring in big advertisers.
Newspapers have gone the same way, they have to print what sells, and what draws in adverts.

bingo.
