Suella Braverman - sacked as Home Secretary (p394)

Good news, called it when Sunak and Macron discussed like adults some efforts to control this

Home Secretary Suella Braverman will travel to Paris to sign a new joint declaration with French officials to ramp up efforts to stop migrant crossings in the Channel.

The home secretary will sign the agreement with French interior minister Gerald Darmanin on Monday morning.

According to the Financial Times, the agreement will significantly increase the 200 French officers and volunteers who operate on Channel beaches and encourage France to aim for a higher proportion of migrants prevented from leaving.

A government insider confirmed that the deal had been struck, the newspaper reported, which is set to include a rise in payments from London to Paris and a closer relationship between the two countries' border policing teams.

That’s good news! Also they should of tried to get deal that if we pick any people up in the dingys we can take them back to France have a camera crew filming it! Because that would deter them more than stopping them! We only have to show it happening a few times and they’d think twice at spending a few thousand pounds to come across! Oh hope they fucked of the ridiculous fly them to Rwanda

Anything that the government has said to be ramped up hasn’t happened.

It makes me doubt this will make any difference.

Hardly seems like a game changer.
Annual payment up to 63M compared to existing 55M and 'closer cooperation'.

also …
  • A 40% increase in the number of officers patrolling beaches in northern France to increase early detection and disruption of illegal small boat crossings;
  • Investment in port security infrastructure in France to prevent illegal entry via lorries. This includes stepping up surveillance, more CCTV, new surveillance technology and detection dog teams;
  • More technology to better equip officers to prevent crossings, including drones and night vision capabilities;
  • Agreement to step up cooperation with European partners, with plans for a meeting of the "Calais Group" neighbouring countries as soon as possible to drive progress;
  • A new taskforce, focused on reversing the recent rise in Albanian nationals and organised crime groups exploiting illegal migration routes into Western Europe and the UK;
  • Joint UK-France analysis teams to build on existing channels of information-sharing and step up operational cooperation as part of the French-command HQ;
  • Investment in reception and removal centres in France for migrants whose journeys to the UK are prevented, to deter crossing attempts and provide them with safe options instead.

What part of 'that is illegal' do you have a problem with?

Yeah - 'investment', 'joint analysis ', 'new taskforce', 'more cooperation 'more technology' blah blah blah.
All mañana and stuff like this has been promised in the past.
Just saw a commentator on BBC who reckoned it was just a bit more of the same that had been tried in the past. He quoted some big coordination centre that had been set up in 2018 at significant cost and appears to have had very little impact.
Finger in the dam springs to mind.

Indeed. A week of ‘this government is getting to grips’ awaits.

The reality is that the French cannot hold these people indefinitely, so even if they put them into camps for short durations, they will inevitably leave and try to continue their onward journey.

Not until countries seriously address the pull factors in their own countries and address the push factors in the countries of origin will the problem be alleviated. The longer they delay in acting, the more serious the problem will become.
