Suella Braverman - sacked as Home Secretary (p394)

The archbishop wanted the bill amended but why would labour want to abstain ? I’m lost when it comes to politics.

Because they've said that the govt will use the Parliament Act to enforce it regardless of what happens in the Lords.
By not voting it down, they can slow it with amendments.

It sounds odd that not voting is better than voting against, but they're not supporting a single amendment which would cause the Lords to vote it down.
