Sunderland post match thread

Long time lurker. Had to finally create an account after that.
Totally fascinating, I loved every part of that (apart from their goal obviously) Pep is changing football all over the world and our journey with him has just started. So many positives but the best thing is we've only got to wait till Tuesday to watch them play again!
Exciting times ahead. The sky's the limit.

Thought the fluidity of the play was very interesting, especially the use of the (would you call them?) underlapping full backs

Seemed amazingly helpful in creating space all over the pitch

I wasn't there so this is all speculation but... As far as the "flat" atmosphere is concerned I would think that some of it had to do with people watching the tactics, positioning and movement of the players more attentively than previous years. There was so much talk the last few months about how we were going to set up, play and approach the game philosophically. My guess is that instead of singing or yelling something at Defoe many of the match goers were instead quietly contemplating why Clichy and Bac were playing in the middle of the pitch and observing how Stones + Kolarov would start the attack by dribbling forward, passing, then making a run while Fernandino dropped back to fill the space.

Could be way off... But that's my theory on the "flat" atmosphere

Good shout that mate. As others have said was fascinsting to watch and certainly had my attention before snapping back to reality and thinkin oh fuck we got a match to win. Tactics be damned ha ha

Huge difference in playing style & posession.
Shocked with the omission of Hart and yet another statement from Pep with no Yaya in side.
Noticed every corner & freekick Kun ran out to the D.
Stones brought the defending line right up to the half way line.
Centre backs moved right out to corners when keeper had ball for distribution
Any free kicks against us a defending line was high leaving a big gap at back.

Interesting times ahead.

plenty of promise, disjointed in the final third but that's the area Pep leaves more onus on the players so hopefully he'll give them a few pointers in the week.

Sterling superb, just willing to run and has that confidence to do so back. Stones positive, Kolarov good, Clichy did well for the most part. Silva was back to being largely magnificent, beautiful player. Downsides were Kun and KDB who didn't have enough impact on the game, and Nolito had a quiet debut but he will grow.

Think Pep named a team that told everyone he wants 3/4 more players, but they still tried hard, didn't come off some of the time but it's the first game and it's a transition and a project. This was always going to be one of the hardest games for us because Pep hasn't had enough time yet. To still win when it would have been so easy to fold and lose, is testament to the new spirit (however artificial in parts) Pep has stressed upon the team. For that he deserves the most credit.
