Sunderland post match thread

Interesting start:

Positives

Got the win
No injuries
Stones looks quality
Sterling looks refreshed and confident
Pep looking to think outside the box
Kun of to a flyer
Good possession
Good bench
Moyes gutted

Negatives

Merlin losing a bit of his magic
Massive vote of no confidence in Joe
We have one sufficient defender at the club
I would fear for us with less possession against a good side (derby!!)
Kelechi is obviously going to be used sparingly again this season
We have some very similar players at the club
 
Had to laugh.
Missed the game, as I'd committed myself to cricket umpiring. Afterwards I went to a 50th birthday party, and heard around 5 or 6 positive descriptions of Sterling, Kolarov, innovative tactics, performance, possession etc etc.
Then I got home and watched the 3 minute MOTD highlights which seemed to imply that Sunderland absolutely battered us.

Sterling was outstanding and you can see that pep has given him confidence just to run at players again and not to worry if it doesnt come off.

Against better teams we will need to improve esp defensively but i think that will come with practise. Dihno was outstanding...all over the pitch. Sometimes collecting the ball between the two centre halves , closing down in midfield. The full backs pushing up and inside was very noteable which helped gain control of the midfield central area.

The amazing thing is that i think pep wont play like that every week and he will change it dependant upon who we are playing (hopefully) but there were some amazingly encouraging signs there from huge parts of the game

This is how i saw the match also, we can only get a real test in matches that count like this, Pep will do more refining, deciding xyz player is better doing abc etc etc but pretty soon it will have clicked enough to see teams running after shadows for the most part. Also a few players need to get up to speed, Kun for example was a bit off the boil, tried but it just was not his day.

I wasn't there and only listened on the radio but that said I thought your keeper did well and the new signings of course seemed to gel well with more to come. Nolito was mentioned an awful lot in commentary so I assume he did well. Jesus Navas I thought caused us problems.

Ignore comments like that pal. City and Sunderland get on well in my book. One of only two other sets of fans I like.

I never understand when people say the opposition fans celebrated too much, I mean come on whoever said that ffs! That's what should happen!

Hi bud, could you do us one favour and ask your board why they insist to buy utd's dross xD Honest it must be proper annoying for you as it winds me up and i don't even havean interest in it really. Also how is Moyes perceived in general in mackem land bud, not really had much chance to see what shape other teams are in generally.
 
The BBC feed kept analysing Pep's tactics. I can't remember ever seeing that before. I just hope every journo doesn't try to display their supreme knowledge by over analysing everything and ruining our game plan!

Loads of 'hilarious' tweets into BBC about how Sterling had done more in 4 mins by winning that penalty than he did in 270 at the Euros.
Other than the penalty he won inside 5 mins against Iceland of course...

Ha ha that was my gripe in MotD thread last night. Shocking editing. A fellow Blue said he knew the guy who did the editing and its the 'pundits' who decide what to include.
 
I heard Moyes having a moan about the non awarding of a corner on MOTD, couldn't make out myself if Caballero actually touched it, did he?

Isn't that symptomatic of the English game though: complain about one corner incident when you have 25% possession or less over the whole game.

I know Sunderland have had a tough time and I hope they come good but, along with the press, this focus on minutiae and failing to see the bigger picture, holds us back.

Agree with every word but still curious as to whether he touched it or not.

When i get the BT backhaul feed you hear and see the pundits at halftime etc and can hear them off cam. On that show they defo do all that, they have a chatter about what they want to highlight and then kinda say that to someone of screen who obviously quickly chucks the footage up for the pundits ready for after the advert break. Nobody tells them what they will be looking at, they decide the focus. I don't see why the BBC would be different in this respect so whoever said that imo is correct.

Makes sense that they would want to put in what they want to talk about after the highlights but you'd have thought somewhere among them there would be a director of sorts who wants/could direct the editor to show a balanced 'account', some of the nice build up play and chances, but as someone rightly pointed out looked like sunderland were in control of the match and just 'unlucky'. I know they only have a short space of time but does make me chuckle when I watch HL's things like that. Par for the course and too long into this crazy journey of ours to lose any sleep over it :)
 
Just watching MOTD, fast forward through all the managers and pundits comments as normal as they are just a waste of time.
 
Not the best performance, but factoring in our shoddy Arsenal pre-season game, a new manager, a whole new way of thinking, new players, strange positions, it wasn't the disaster some people were predicting. When we get a fully fit squad to pick from, and are upto speed, I expect we will start to purr, and tear defences apart.
I presume Yaya will anchor midfield on Tuesday, and Otomendi will partner Stones.
Good to see Sterling playing with confidence again, Stones looked good apart from the goal, KDB was off the pace, Aguero missed a few, Fernandinho was everywhere,some good chasing down and pressing, and signs that we are quickly adapting to the Pep way.
Quietly confident, but willing to give Pep and the team time to find the groove.

Not sure how Silva can be classed as a negative. He had a very good 60 mins in comparison to a lot of his performances last season. If anything he got a bit of his magic back.
