Swansea (a) Post Match Thread

I think you have to look at things in the context of the entire league. Winning with 100 points doesn't make a squad better than one who wins with only 80 points (for instance).
I personally think we have declined, so agree with you, but the points totals aren't the best measure. League position probably spells it out much better.
I agree with you on the league points. That is why I never brought up the point that this is our lowest points tally since Mark Hughes was around. But every single thing shows regression yet this guy can't see it.

And this is my point. Sterling is a 21 year old boy and Bellamy was a seasoned professional so comparing the two is a bit unfair. Delph and Benteke were practically keeping Villa up single handedly. We get Delph, play him on the left wing and wonder if even at £8m he was a waste of money.

Tbh, I don't wonder at none of it and just like I was sure we would regress under Pellegrini unless he changed his train crash all out attacking philosophy, I'm pretty confident any decent top level manager would have made a better fist with what Pellegrini had than he did. I'm also sure we wouldn't have needed Pep Guardiola to prove that theory either.

Fans, pundits, football professionals have all at times been at a loss as to what the hell Pellegrini was thinking whilst managing us and they can't all be wrong. When he came here all that was needed was evolution not revolution and to build upon the solid foundations left by Mancini, but the first thing he did was to needlessly tear it all apart. Why?

All the character traits of the last 2 seasons were there in the first if his sympathisers care to look. The only difference was, our team still had Mancini's fear factor, but it only took a couple of teams to have a go and within a season the whole league was at it and we were well and truly found out. Lest you forget, Alladyce, Pardew, Rogers, Pulis they all commented that we were defensively vulnerable and there was a way to beat us and one by one that's what they did. Did Manuel react? Did he fuck, he just came out and said 'We always play the same way'.

His disciples may have turned out in force to see him off today, but the when given the chance to do so at the Etihad, the vast majority of fans fucked off home showing exactly what they think of this charming man and the way he has (mis) handled our once feared team. This is why his sympathisers are now laughably claiming Manuel has suffered because he has a worse squad now than when he took over! Total bollocks, the only thing that is considerably worse now than when Manuel took over is the manager and we have year on year league points tallies to prove that.

It IS very hard to compare individual players etc, and we won't know the true measure of some players until they've been with us for longer, but as things stand right now, it's a tough job to argue that a lot of buys in the last 3 seasons have moved us forward. Doesn't matter if they are 18, or 35, it's about what measuring tangible progress. CL progress was great, but offset by poor league form.
In another 2 or 3 seasons, some of our signings may well prove their worth, but as it stands, their 'potential' is purely speculative.

Under Mancini, rumours were that a number of players disliked his methods and things were stormy behind the scenes. Pellegrini (in theory) was supposed to bring a calming atmosphere - and it would appear he managed that very well - arguably though, it's resulted in too much calm! I wouldn't like to say which of the two managerial styles is better - they are just different, I just don't feel the change of style has benefitted us to any significant extent. I don't like to see any manager do badly at City, but I think Pellegrini's taken us as far as he could. I don't know if that's true of Mancini.

I think Klopp or Pep would have been significant upgrades on Pellegrini and Mancini though - and now we've secured that upgrade. Roll on next season.

Didn't Coppell only do like 30 days?

All sorts of rumours on that one - but the official line was he was suffering from mental issues (stress) and claimed the job was bigger than he imagined. If that's true then he did the right thing in quitting right away - it did us no favours though.

The other rumours aren't really worth getting into.

After last week, I would bitten your hand off for stumbling over the line, so that will do very nicely. Performance that summed up the season in many ways, great start, should have got atleast a second when we were on top, but we dropped off in the last 5 minutes and were sloppy, gave the ball away too cheaply, and as a result conceded a goal from a deflected freekick right on halftime. We had chances to kill the game second half, but just lacked that killer touch in the final third. Although it was nervy, I thought we saw out the last 15 minutes quite comfortably. Onwards and upwards from here.

Great post

Your wrong about Reid , a good manager who got us into the top six with very limited resources , if the club had given him some finance we would have been title contenders , admittedly not the most attractive football , but he got results.
f He did get backed by Swailes , at the time the signings of curle and phelan were two of the most expensive defenders in Europe I think over 6m for the pair 25 years or so ago
