cityfansimon might have to reconsider his swim if he watches that.

Frightened the bejeezus out of me.

And I'm hard.

It's a different type of swimming. Before my first open water swim, I tried swimming non stop in loops at the gym pool. Knackered me out. Outdoor swimming is much easier because of the wetsuit. After my first swim in Salford I did 4 laps before I decided to get out. Turned out I'd done a mile and it felt fine.

Once you're ready to go Salford Quays, give me a shout and I'll show you dome tips and stuff[/quote]

Scall that will be great. I'll get in touch with you. Gonna get a couple of months of pool swimming in first, but that would help.

Don't go absolutely mental on the pool swimming, you'll get bored and it'll affect your willingness to keep going until the event.

Here's the info about swimming in the quays:

They're cleaned up pretty well. The water's mirky of course, but it's safe to swim in and it's quite interesting doing front crawl, lifting your head out the water for a bit of air and there's a swan next to you.
However, it is cold at first (after a few minutes you don't feel the temperature) and swimming without being able to see a few inches in front of you can freak you out at first.

But you feel great afterwards, because it's proper swimming unlike pools where you push yourself off the walls at the start of each length.

There should be a picture of the swim and then a picture of some trainers...? Not sure how to delete the picture of the trainers.

Thanks in advance to anyone that supports and sponsors me with this.

Got it, thanks very much for it. The swim is on the 16th of June (no footy) so the more the merrier.

Ha, suppose so yeah, hope I don't sink though, by the sounds of the water there won't taste to good so I don't fancy getting a mouthful of it on the way down.

Any tips will be appreciated here. I know I'm gonna need to spend a lot of time in pools and lakes between now and then, but any tips on how to swim in open water conditions would be great, or any help with what exercises will help me with my training for this.

As mentioned I'm a touch out of condition and my diet I can take care of, but any help will be much appreciated.

I'm mighty glad its the width rather than the length!

It has to be freestyle with a distance like that, so my suggestion is to get help on technique, energy conservation, diet and swimsuit.

After that its about your physical conditioning.
