Swimming Thread

Just been for my final swim of the year at Hough End where I completed a slow but steady 100 lengths.
My final distance total for 2024 was 284.05956km (which is 176.506 miles).
I achieved my target for the year, which, in the spirit of constant personal improvement, was slightly further than last year!
In 2025 I'm going to be swimming more frequently, but reducing the number of lengths per visit.
Fair play, I feel tired just reading that! :-)

When I lived in Bournemouth there was a club of older people that met everyday and swam in the sea, I think you're right about the health benefits

Well I ain't swimming in the sea, you can never be sure what's in the sea .. no siree, i'm sticking to the swimming pool, at least in there i can see what's sniffing around my feet!

Did my first outdoor swim of the year this morning at the Oasis Sports Centre in Covent Garden.
Apart from the usual London passive aggressive wankers, and the weird FOC exhibitionists in the showers it was quite pleasant.
I changed my routine at the start of the year from 3 runs and 2 swims a week to 2 runs and 3 swims, so therefore broke the 50km barrier so far for the year for swims this morning.

Just been for my first swim of the year at Nantwich Outdoor Pool after It reopened for Spring.
It was a tad chaotic as it was a "general" rather than "lane" session, but thankfully became quieter after a while.
The water was relatively cold this morning, but in the end, it felt perfect once I'd completed a few lengths.

Spent the day at Cheltenham Lido yesterday and wow what a beautiful place. My lad was racing there and spent a delightful 3/4 hours sat in the sun watching the racing. Don't even know of any outdoor pools in the Preston area and our weather is shite so doubt they would be that in demand here.

In the North West there's only really Nantwich and Hathersage, although there's going to be one at Holt Town in the shadow of the Etihad in the next couple of years!

EDIT; There's also a few in Cumbria at Greystroke, Askham, Lazonby and Shap which i'd forgotten about!

I used to go to one in St Annes (could of been Fleetwood) i think when i was a kid in the early 80's. It was salt water but have vague happy memories of summer days there.

The one at Grange over Sands is returning too, but there's a lot of work to do, and plenty of money to be raised too, apparently.

I was bought this for my 50th birthday just under 4 years ago, and as a slightly aspergic chap, I saw it as a challenge to try to visit as many as possible!

Phew . I've been in the habit of
" swimming the squad " for a few years now . 50 m per player three times a week . Looks like I'm going to be increasing my distance until we off load a few players . Haven't yet got the new names into my brain but it will come , it will come .

Given that I only normally swim 40 x 50m lengths or 80 x 25m lengths per session, I rarely get to swim Rico Lewis or James McAtee lengths!
However, 21 is always David Silva whoever is currently wearing the shirt.

Entered the great swim - half mile distance at Lake Windermere on Sunday.

A challenge and looking forward to it.

My elder sister is swimming that for a heart charity. You are brave souls given the known pollution issues in Windermere!

Just started swimming again after a few years of doing practically none. Can do breaststroke all day but just 1 length of front crawl and I'm blowing our of my arse. Any tips or is the best bet getting some lessons on technique?

I stick with breaststroke as I haven't managed to master the breathing technique for crawl.
If your pool offers adult lessons it may be worth seeing if they offer anything on form and technique.
