Sycamore Gap tree felled | Man in his 60s also arrested

Criminal damage to a memorial attracts a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of £2,500

At the very least, it is a £20k fine for felling a tree under protection.

That's assuming no further impact on the site under various additional protection categories, which include up to 10 year prison sentences and uncapped fines. Given the significance and attention to this, could see it going quite far with it.

That's just the heritage and conservation side, not the forestry and ecological act, which has its own punishments.

Assuming anyone is proven to have done it, of course.

Yes I posted then seen you summed it up better than I already

The National Trust have now removed it.

As you said, good effort by the lad and top marks for the good inventions. But, people should leave this to the professionals and custodians of the site now.
Yeah, apparently whilst the Nat Park were seemingly happy for it to stay, the Nat Trust had no option but to remove it as the Wall is a UNESCO site. Shame about that. Good intentions, though, unlike the t**t who cut down the original.

This is interesting, on the forestry (rather than heritage) side of it, claims it is uncapped as of this year. I don't know much about that side of it, so only going by what the article is saying.

Pretty telling how small the number of convictions is, but again given the significance and exposure of this one, you'd be surprised if they don't publicly pursue it fully. Whether or not they do both (heritage And forestry).

@urban genie , you might find the article interesting as part of the wider discussion you were raising.
