Sycamore Gap tree felled | Man in his 60s also arrested

I’m relieved there seems to be some sort of motive here and it wasn’t some senseless kid doing it for a laugh.

Is it a memorial though, I thought it was just a tree, a landmark tree granted but just a normal tree.

It is, because protection with these categories isn't just to the bricks and mortar, or a building, statue or wall. It is on the whole site, and its 'setting'. In some cases, there is an argument that removing a tree doesn't affect that. In this one, no chance.

A bit moot now anyway, as the act damaged the actual wall, so it is now pretty clear.

The tree itself was also protected, by virtue of a separate conservation category.

If you are going to read into it, the dude says it wasn't him.

But I do get what you mean.
