He is irritating, he is annoying, he is Alan Brazil. And breakfast without him would be like toast without butter.
When he is talking across his guests (most of them), you just want him to be quiet. When he is hyping something ‘This is a big, big; big, big game,’ you want him to turn down the volume.
But to turn him off? Come on TalkSport – he is the jewel in your crown.
Motormouth: Alan Brazil is just as comfortable behind the microphone as he was in the penalty area as a player
Charles Sale’s story this morning that Brazil may talk on Talksport no more will send shockwaves through his loyal listeners. Around one million regularly listen to his early-morning show.
They tune in each morning for his mixture of racing knowledge and football joy. His sometimes odd choice of broadcast partner (Brian Moore… really?) doesn’t seem to put them off, but they trust his opinions and thrive on his passion.
Cheers: The footballer turned presenter is well known for his bon viveur lifestyle and big character
Feeling horse: Brazil talks with equal enthusiasm on both the game he played and racing
It’s a long time since Brazil played for Ipswich, Manchester United and Spurs (1977-1986). Not to mention stopping off at Detroit Express, Coventry, QPR, Stambridge, Witham Town, Wollongong City and somewhere called Baden. He scored once in 13 Scotland caps, but his 70 league goals in 154 games for Bobby Robson’s Ipswich team is what most remember him for, although that was 30 years ago.
On the pitch: Brazil made his name as a striker. He is pictured here scoring for Manchester United in 1984
United we stand: Brazil (third left) with Ron Atkinson, Jasper Olsen and Gordon Strachan
You need to be of a certain vintage to appreciate Brazil’s prowess in the box, although we are often reminded of his prowess at the bar.
He can laugh at himself, which is one of the reasons why listeners enjoy sharing their mornings with him – he doesn’t take himself too seriously.
He is a ‘big, big; big, big’; performer for TalkSport. Charles Sale says they pay him £1,500-a-show. They need to get the chequebook out and give him a ‘big, big; big, big’ rise.
