Taylor for the Liverpool game

I was speaking with reference to the definitions (careless and reckless) under the rules of the game and which, relatively speaking, was the more appropriate tag, given that it was deemed a foul. In other words, I thought the yellow could be argued to be harsh and that it definitely was not a red. I suspect some refs would have gone for red, most yellow and the odd one would have let it go without a caution.

The only thing I care about here is that Taylor appeared to handle it fairly and did not show a red.

Which is the correct way of looking at it.
'Getting the ball' means nothing at all if the challenge is violent/dangerous/reckless.
The laws talk of "challenging or attempting a challenge', which VK did, with his outstretched foot making contact with his studs on Salah's toe, and making contact before his trailing leg played the ball. I can see that that could legitimately be seen as 'reckless', which is a yellow card offence.

What it wasn't was a scissors (see what Brady of Burnley was sent off for), and wasn't what I would use 'two-footed' for.

Kevin Friend (born 8 July 1971)[2] is an English professional football referee based in Leicester. He is a member of the Leicestershire and Rutland County Football Association.

In 2016, Friend was controversially prevented from officiating a Premier League match between Stoke City and title contenders Tottenham Hotspur, due to him being a supporter of fellow title challengers Leicester City.[6]

Fair enough, ta.

The trouble with this type of thing is that you could rapidly end up with minimal refs being available for specific matches.

Promote more referees and have a bigger pool then, having a bigger pool of potential referees is also a good way to prevent match fixing and corruption, win-win.

Well, yes.
But is the group small because it's easier to run, or because there aren't enough who want to be vilified by thousands every week?

Which makes it insoluble, as it can't be changed without RIley going or the PL forcing it.
Riley really should be gone, he's fucked up enough major instances and drawn enough controversy. But then again referees should never have been independent of the FA in the first place.
