Taylor for the Liverpool game

A large part of being a premiership referee is fitness and it's fairly obvious a lot of refs just don't care enough about the job to stay fit even though they are on a good screw.

Dowd is long gone to be fair. I always thought he was a decent official, but was just a bit out of shape (well he had plenty of shape obviously).
He was actually decent when he was up with play tbf, his problem was making snap calls late in games when they were stretched and he was 50-60 yards away and invariably getting them wrong.
No referee should get away with being that unfit at professional level though, with what we know about fatigue and it's effects on good decision making. That goes for the older refs as well as the overweight ones.

I think there are only 11 refs currently used by PiGMOB.
The equivalent in Germany is 18 and 20 in Italy I believe,
The number of Italian refs increased after the corruption scandal broke a few years back.

It's more than 11 - that would be untenable when 10 are needed each week.

The Select Group has 17 in it, I think, although one or two are rarely called on (oddly, Coote is one and is the ref today, I think).

Andy Madley isn't Select Group, but may well be next year.

Anyone have a breakdown of how Italy and Germany spread their top flight games?

To be fair to Taylor he’s out running on Timperley Rec a lot. Keeps himself in shape well compared to some of them who my 83 year old Grandad looks in better shape than.

I’d love to see some of them ref a rugby league game where the ref has to get back ten metres every tackle and is up and down the pitch like an 80 minute bleep test; they’d have no fucking chance some of them!

We had one in the CL recently who didn’t really leave a zone that went about ten yards outside the centre circle. If he broke into a jog at any point he whistled for a free kick to catch his breath. Think it was Hoffenheim away, total fucking chump of a ref!

20 refs each, small range from most appearances to fewest.

I know for the PL, that one or two show up repeatedly at the same ground, and there will always be one or two injuries which drop someone's appearances down a bit. The IT and DE refs though get far fewer matches, so have far more recovery time, particularly for UEFA refs. Clearly this is preferable.

It says it all that people are praising Taylor for an ok performance.
Compared to some of the horror shows we’ve had against liverpool he wasn’t too bad.
Can’t believe more has not been made of the Sterling non pen though. Surely once he cuts that ball back the full back can’t touch him? Robertson just grabs him and flops to the floor, has to be a pen in my book.

Yes it's pretty sad when a ref is deemed to have been not bad just because they've not had a complete shit show. Remember calling him a prick for a few decisions, but then that happens most weeks with most refs.
