Taylor for the Liverpool game

It's more than 11 - that would be untenable when 10 are needed each week.

The Select Group has 17 in it, I think, although one or two are rarely called on (oddly, Coote is one and is the ref today, I think).

Andy Madley isn't Select Group, but may well be next year.

Anyone have a breakdown of how Italy and Germany spread their top flight games?
They never need ten as there’s never ten games played on the same day apart from the last.
Look at who get’s the games, not who’s named in the group.
Either way it’s well below other top leagues.

You want refs to ref a game on Saturday and Sunday? And then midweek as well, sometimes in international/CL/EL?
No, you need more than 10.

The Select Group lost Bobby Madley at the start of the season, which has left them down one as well. Scott and one or two others are known to be occasionals, and I think Scott/East are into their 50s. It's an ageing pool which needs refilling quickly, and Riley is failing to make it happen.

I’m not saying they only need 10, I think there should be at least double that number. Maybe even 30.
I also don’t think refs should be announced until the day before the game.
We seem to be at cross purposes. I think Riley has deliberately kept the number small to keep more control.

With VAR to come in and hopefully improvements in future technologies that help police a game I’m hoping the officiating will become fairer and more regular.

The speed and intensity of football these days, coupled with clever simulation and the likes do make it much harder for refs. Finally we seem to be embracing the technology that can help.

Funny you should say that.
Talking to some Burnley fans this morning and they were furious with it.
We came to the conclusion it will only be fair and transparent when the ref’s decision is talked through whilst showing it on the big screen

Yep, they have to be miked up and the replay should be on the big screen and not pitch side. Of course it's too difficult to take tips from the most successful VAR system currently in use (Rugby Union).

Are you saying every decision that requires VAR would be shown on the screens at stadiums (those that have them) and the ref’s decision is talked through with who, the fans, the managers, players? That would massively slow the game down!

You have to let refs do their jobs.

Don`t forget that most 4th Match Officials are from this list also.Maybe time to free them up and use slightly lesser referees ... its hardly rocket science to be the 4th Match Official.
Is it ? ;)

Don’t you watch rugby?
Makes the game fair and transparent, or don’t we want that?
