Tennis Thread

Sorry, was behind on this thread, but getting back to tuning in. I actually have resumed playing too, so tennis is definitely on the mind!

Yes, with Sinner #1 seed in the French, he's the favourite, but after what Alcaraz did in the Rome finals, I have to like his chances too, especially on clay given he's the defending champion.

#1 Sinner gets #3 Zverev and #5 Draper and a Murray-less #6 Djokovic on his half of the bracket while
#2 Alcaraz gets #4 Fritz and #7 Ruud on his side.

Advantage Carlos in my book.

Either way, very much looking forward to the upcoming tournament, in both the men's and women's for the US, UK, and the other favourites.
Yes, I agree. Don't know what happened to Sinner in the Rome final but Alcaraz was far better.

I hadn't looked at the draw details but he does look to have the better half.

Yes, looking forward to the French Open. Up until this year, we have been able to pay £6.99 for the month to watch it on Discovery+, which was incredible value. Now it's part of TNT Sports via Discovery+ it's £30.99. Anyway, should be a good two weeks.

Sinner was struggling at the end of his semis match against Tommy Paul with a blister on his foot, and even while dominating the two sets he won, he didn't look 100%.

Alcaraz said after his win that he mentally gets up for playing Sinner, and I think the effort is very well shown in the results there. I would say Carlos is a bit less "inconsistent" when they meet up too.

Yeah, that's just crazy uneven to me, even though I realize they think they are evening it out with #8 and #10 on Alcaraz's side, but I don't think it is the same.

Give me the NCAA tournament/NHL/NBA format of: 1v8, 4v5 / 3v6, 2v7 format any day over how tennis sets things up, but I digress...

Yes, the French Open in the US was usually the barren dessert of TV coverage in recent prior years with a subscription to the Tennis Channel needed and NBC owning the overall rights. ABC/ESPN had us covered on all of the other 3 majors without a doubt.

Thankfully for this year, the French Open will air on (US's) TNT and truTV as NBC no longer owns the broadcast rights for the event. Matches can also be streamed on Max, which we have, so I'm looking forward to it too!

Saw a bit of Sinner yesterday - liked his tennis a lot more than his hideous green shirt!

Also, an incredibly moving tribute to Rafael Nadal on Sunday that resulted in Federer, Djokovic and Murray coming out on court to join him and then the unveiling of his footprint, now permanently resident next to the net post on Court Phillipe Chatrier.

Nadal is the king of the clay, just brilliant.

I saw the photos, but I need to go back and see the coverage being otherwise occupied that day. Well deserved for the GOAT of Clay and my favourite of those tennis greats.

Great match between Draper and Monfils.
I'm behind watching today being on holiday (don't recall saying that before, but here I am... ;-), and I will say that set 4 was some of the best tennis I have seen in a loooong time.

Draper down 2-4, and then nearly breaking Monfils numerous times in a game that easily went over 20 minutes on its own to go down 2-5, and the thought would be that it would be over in soon facing a set point too. But no!

Monfils is so entertaining, and still a brilliant player.
He really is, and is a clear crowd favourite, fan favourite, and from what I've heard reported, a player favourite. He made some amazing shots for someone of his 38 years, and I was admittedly a bit torn watching at times, because I like both players. They had a nice hug at the end and you could tell it was genuine respect.

Draper did well to battle through with the crowd obviously behind the Frenchmen.
He did, and he kept his head the whole team in realizing where he was. I loved in that 4th set when he made that amazing shot to win the point that hit the backline and he made the "get up and cheer" with his hands to at least acknowledge what he was doing.

Fonseca in Round 3, another tough match.
It will be indeed.

I'm looking forward to the "battle of TCU" and the UK with Cam Norrie vs. Jacob Fearnley on Saturday too.

4 US men in action tomorrow, with 3 with decent shots to advance if they play well. Tiafoe vs. Korda should be a good match. Gotta go with Big Foe in that one, but nothing would surprise me there.

There were some odd moments in that 3rd set.

Draper was down the camera end and couldn't hard a barn door - every shot was going out. Then they switched ends and Monfils was doing the same thing. Monfils laughing after every point and chunnering to his coaching team was funny. Went to bed after the 3rd set so glad to find out Draper got through.

A bit surprised it wasn't, but credit to Jack Draper and the drop shots today in breezing into the round of 16. Nice win and got to see him post-match on the US TNT studio interview at the table. He'll be top 4 going into Wimbledon after this tournament, and deservedly so.

I typically always cheer for Cam Norrie, but I certainly will be even more for his next match in the round of 16. A win would be one to celebrate in "25" for sure! ;-)

3 US Men play tomorrow and then 2 UK on Monday in the Round of 16, so well done there! I'll dream about a matchup in the finals while I can.

5 US Women still playing in the Round of 16 for the first time in quite a long time (1985, but who's counting?), so I'll celebrate this now too.

Draper deserves more recognition, he looks the real deal.
From what I saw yesterday, he didn't play badly, he just came up against Bublik who was in sublime form and hardly missed anything.

He'll rise to number 4 on Monday and I think he can look forward to good runs at Wimbledon and the US open.

But the rest of the field are miles adrift of Sinner and Alcaraz.

I called that bad timing! he shouldn't be losing to Bublik although that guy played like a man possessed.

Good learning curve for Draper, he has the potential to challenge for majors i feel although it's tough to see past Sinner and Alcaraz.
