Tennis Thread

Don't get me too wrong. I watched it and enjoyed, she was brilliant but like most news coverage it just goes too far.
This is a 17 year old winning a tennis Major. That hasn’t been achieved in women’s tennis since 2004, and the only other players to achieve that are:
Maria Sharapova
Serena Williams
Martina Hingis
Monica Seles
Arancha Sanchez Vicario
Steffi Graf
Tracy Austin

She’s in great historic company, and she’s British!

The coverage is now a little over the top as our media does but it's kept that new rag player out of the news
I think because in terms of a story this was remarkable at so many levels, a whole bunch of records that are likely to never be broken, not least of all that she has never won a pro-event before the US Open and only managed to qualify for qualifying at the end of last month! Even one of the records would have been a major story, but this is something that will be spoken about 100 years from now and looked back and said wow wasn't sport wacky back then!

Very nice, but come on. Who gives a fuck about tennis?

I'm 62 years old and I have played or have friends who have played

Football Rugby Cricket Snooker Darts All types of cards Boxing Martial Arts, lower level car and motor bike sports and even some American sports such as Super Bowl and Entry level NASCAR

Well done to her, but its such a minor / privalaged sport that I cant do it

"All types of cards"?

Fuck me. What was the dedication and training regime like for your mate who played Snap?

Or you could say, a more even spread of talent than the men. Nevertheless, you are probably right. The women's rankings change with amazing rapidity.
The final was high quality, the first three games taking 25 mins or so as they each struggled to get on top. Maybe these two will dominate.
I think Emma is much more likely to cement herself in the top 10, she has a bigger game than Fernandez and she has so much room to improve conditioning wise. Would be nice to see them both do well long term - they both seem like lovely kids, Canada must be proud of them.

I really like tennis, well I do watch the four Majors. Admittedly, I don’t actually watch women’s tennis though.

But anyone can pick up a tennis racket for a few quid and get down their local park. Wythenshawe Park has a tennis club. There’s nothing privileged about it at grassroots, it’s not polo. I’d reckon parents can spend less on tennis gear for their kid than they do football boots, Astro trainers and kits.

Fernandez has said in the post-match interviews that she didn't know the rule on a bleeding cut bringing an immediate halt.
Usually medical timeouts have to wait until there is a changeover.

I can't remember seeing a player getting a cut before.
Me neither but if she'd had the cut herself she'd be asking for the game to be temporarily stopped... It was

Not sure it can go too far at the moment, given that this is probably one of the most historic moments in British sport; even if she doesn't fulfil her potential to become the biggest female star British sport has ever seen.

Has Liverpool claimed her as a supporter since birth and taken credit for her win yet? - we'll know she has arrived when they do!

Might be a short lived thread but Raducanu's about to start her 4th round match v Shelby Rogers on Amazon Prime.

Raducanu hasn't dropped a set yet, she's had to play 3 qualifying rounds as well, so she's won 6 matches 2-0. She's up against an American in New York, who's just knocked out the No1 seed, so it'll be tough.

Big opportunity for Raducanu though.

Goodbye serena and a big warm welcome to Emma

Piers Morganis laughable this morning trying to claim his comments were justified/helpful last year and as for Farage the cheeky ****.
It wasn’t last year. His comments were 2 months ago. It was totally unjustifiable to have a go at an 18 year old girl then and to now make out he did her a favour is utterly pathetic. He thinks by saying everyone calling him out on it is woke or virtue signalling he can justify his idiotic comments. Morgan is an odious turd who’s made himself look like a total fucking arsehole. No surprise when you look at his history of being obsequious to Trump and his repeated bullying of Meghan Markle ending with his hissy fit live on TV when called out on it.

And as for Farage, he makes Morgan look likeable.

Tournament in Chicago in a couple of weeks and then onto Indian Wells. Winning the US Open has opened the tour right up for her. She was supposed to be starting a small tournament in Luxembourg today.

Give the media their post tournament celebration interview, probably over video and stay in the states until those 2 tournaments are done.
