Tennis Thread

No surprise that Raducanu lost to Swiatek winning only 1 game. Despite what some on this thread believe, she’s just not at the same level as the top players.
One ESPN commentator summarizing the match noted it was like Swiatek was a pro playing a really good junior player.

Swiatek lost only 7 total points on serve, and 3 of those were double faults. That's impressive.

He lost to Marcos Giron of the US, who is having a nice start to the tourney, and that match was close too. Giron will have another tough ask with Sinner up next.
Sinner is still rolling, and that was expected.
I'd be very happy if Fritz and Shelton get to meet up,
Not going to happen, but kudos to Gaël Monfils who is having an amazing form of tennis in this tournament, rolling back his 38 years to become the 2nd oldest player to make the fourth round behind Federer. Shelton vs. Monfils should be a good match next. Impressive for Monfils' wife Svitolina to also upset the #4 seed on the women's side, so a great day for their family on the court today.

and I'm interested to see Moutet vs. "the kid" 19 year old Tien. I know that last match may have taken a lot out of him, but those two both play a pretty cagey game, so it could be quite entertaining.
It was, and Tien brought it again. He or Shelton if they can win next would face either other and guarantee a young US player in the semis.

I also think Jabeur and Navarro could be an entertaining match as well.
That went the distance, and Navarro joins Gauff and Keys form the US in the Fourth Round.

On the men's side, Learner Tien and Alex Michelsen have been the pleasant unranked surprises for the US while Shelton and Tommy Paul are having a good hoped for run. I'll take 4 still going, but those in the top 3 still remaining have to be heavy favourites to take things home.

I also wouldn't be upset if Alex de Minaur finally won a slam in his home country, and he's having a sneaky quiet under the radar run. His ceiling in the other slams has been the QFs, so he's 1 win away from having his best Aussie Open to reach that stage.

It looks like her US Open win was a freak result. Her best performance in any slam tournament since then has been the 4th round at Wimbledon (twice). She just isn't at the level required to win slams. Have her injuries contributed to her poor record? Still; she's apparently worth upwards of £10m, so she's doing okay.

She made the most of a weak post-Covid field to win the US Open. Good luck to her and nobody can take away the fact that she is a Grand Slam winner.

However, someone on here on long ago was claiming that she was as good as Swiatek and Sabalenka, which is clearly way off the mark.

Both Men's and Women's QFs are looking to be setting up nicely, with no major upsets today.

Tommy Paul will have to dig deep to have any shot at Zverev, but that will be interesting to watch if he can win a set and put some pressure on.

In Carlos I trust. Do what needs to be done, please.

Tommy Paul has been playing well - outside chance I suspect

he really is the greatest, unbelievable performance.
Surprised that he beat Alcaraz, but I’ll stick to my feeling that he won’t get past Zverev.

My Mrs watched the match and she said that Djokovic was up to his old tricks again: goes a set down, feigns injury so he can leave the court, comes back a new man.

Maybe it’s in the rules, maybe it’s just gamesmanship but I don’t like it. To be fair, Sinner did the same.

No I think that’s unfair, he really was injured and battled through it , he lost the first set after taking a small time out with injury - after first set I don’t think he took any more time out.
He’s 37, he is pushing his body to the absolute limit and playing 3/4 hour matches. No dirty tricks, he was amazing and fought for everything.

He has done it a lot throughout his career. It’s happened too many times for it not to be a pre-determined tactic.

Having said that, he beat Alcaraz at the age of 37, so he deserved to go through.

A talented player, possibly the greatest ever, but I still don’t like him :)

Pretty much what I was just going to post!

Tommy had his chances, but really came up short in those first 2 set tiebreakers.

Zverev even admitted in the post-match interview how much he didn't feel like he deserved to win those first two sets, but he did.

Paul dominated the 3rd set, but Zverev was just too tough in the 4th.

Hope Zverev is resting up, he will need it on Friday to play better in order to win.

I've finally caught up. Silly work getting in the way of getting to watch some fantastic tennis.

Stop me if you've seen this play out before...

In all seriousness, I do believe Joker needed the meds, and in his post-match on court interview with Jim Courier he noted he may not have continued had he lost the 2nd set.

Nice scene of Joker going over to thank and hug Coach Andy Murray afterwards.

Murray congratulating Alcaraz afterwards while on the stationary bike winding down was another nice touch.
