Tenuous connections to Manchester City players old and new.

In the late 80's my parents used to own a post office in Adwick near Doncaster. One of their customers was the sister of Sam Cowan who made 369 league appearances for City and played in three FA Cup finals. When she heard I was a big City fan she showed me some of the memorobilia she had collected and told me some stories about his time at City. She passed away soon after this - I hope her scrap books were passed on to someone who valued them.

I used to work with someone who worked at weekends doing hospitality at City. She invited me a few times to go and meet the players and had quite a few sessions with Alex Williams who is a great lad. Any time I got below half a pint, he'd top it up. Great lad. Met (briefly) most of the players at the time.

I spoke to Kenny Clements about driving lessons, but he wasn't available when I could do then.

I've met and got pictures with Danny Tiatto, Patrick Viera and Pablo Zabaleta who appeared at our local City Supporters Club.

I was played for a team with someone who appeared on the bench for one of our opponents when we were in Division 2.

On a non-City note, my Gran went to a family wedding (she's from a big Irish family) where one of our family was getting married to one of Bobby Charlton's family.

I used to deliver Sir Matt Busby's 'Daily Express' when he lived at 210 Kings Road in Chorlton-cum-Hardy. He used to give me a 50p tip at Xmas and say, "Merry Christmas son", still with a strong Lanarkshire burr.
My Dad used to deliver his 'Empire News' in the 1930's when he lived in a City Club House off Lloyd Street South in Fallowfield.

In 1985 I worked with the uncle of Mark Lillis. City had just bought Mark (a Manchester lad) from Huddersfield Town for £130,000. Uncle Les was a 100% True Blue and as proud as punch.
Mark had a first good season - (11 goals) - we finished in 15th out of 22 and made the Full Members Cup Final.
Mark was sold to Derby County in August 1986 for £200,000.
Never met Mark Lillis but I worked with his Uncle Les for a year.
Is this tenuous enough??

I met David White in the Llandudno shopping arcade, back when players went on holiday in Llandudno, and he signed my broken arm cast.

My mate snogged Daniel Sturridge in a (the) club in Congleton.

My Dad taught Roger Palmer, Eric Nixon & a few others at secondary school.
Joe Mercer used to come in & hand out prizes at the end of year, etc.

And I once stood behind Denis Tueart & Dave Watson in the queue for ice creams at Dunham.

Lived in Chorlton for 20+ years (1984-2007) and never bumped into Denis Law. Bloody ex-wife saw him loads. She did get me his autograph.
I’m Scottish so Denis is a double hero to me.
I once missed Denis by only 5 minutes. He’d been at Frost the butchers whilst I was at King Bee records talking to Les Hare about “typical City”.
Is that tenuous enough??

You were unlucky. When I lived in Chorlton, I think I only ever went in that Italian restaurant next to the Canadian Charcoal Pit, three times and he was in there two of them.

My old teacher/Head teacher at my primary school was a huge blue probably apart from my dad was the biggest influence on me being a blue, in his top draw he’d have a sellotaped plastic bag of blond hair his sister was one of the nurses who operated on Bert when he broke his neck he always said this was his prize possession. Never forget when he’d bring it out sounds bizarre now .

Foot note I’ll always remember when he sent me home at lunchtime so I could listen to the re-arranged fog bound game against AC Milan on radio 2 in the afternoon.

At Junior school we had a brilliant teacher, a blue and football mad, we listened to that game at school, no lessons if the blues were playing, think we also listened to the Juve game when we lost 2-0, was that an afternoon game? Or is my memory playing tricks.
