Tenuous connections to Manchester City players old and new.

My mum's cousin, Peter Donaghue, (my first cousin once removed) led a consortium to buy City and organised a protest to remove chairman Albert Alexander in the mid 60's and had a rally at the Free Trade Hall.

An agreement was made for all parties to work together and Joe Mercer was appointed manager..... the rest is history.....

For added info, Peter Donaghue owned a string of laundrettes across South Manchester.
So rather than eventually being owned by a Rental TV Salesman, we could have been run by a bloke with a laundrette empire!

Here is a thread I started a few years back on the subject (where I wrongly described him as my 2nd cousin)
So we would have been accused of sportswashing back in the 60s

I was on first name terms due to work with Kenny Clements, Steve Lomas (in his early career with us) & Jack Dyson (always saw him in his England blazer) all really nice blokes the latter two were very unassuming and surprised I knew who they were.

I used to work with lee the groundsman dad, lee used to get us tickets for the home matches
I used to get my ticket through a guy who got them from Lee the groundsman because he worked with his dad

Got given 2 bottles of water at Wembley by Joe Royle as Sir peace frog & I were sat next to the bench & he could see how hung over we both were

I work with Jimmy Meadows' daughter

I was asked to jump start Jeff Whitley's car by his girlfriend who lived on my street & he popped round for a brew a few days later to say thanks

Back in the '80s and '90s, my cousin worked for someone, who was a fanatical Plymouth Argyle supporter, and his firm sponsored the match ball one game each season at Home Park.

Unfortunately, my cousin’s employer died, and he bought out his employer’s widow. Although he had no interest in football, he continued the firm's match ball sponsorship.

In April 1991, his firm sponsored the match ball for Argyle's game against Swindon Town, led by newly-appointed Glenn Hoddle, and he invited me along to sit in the sponsors' box with him and his son.

It was an entertaining game and it ended 3-3, after which, my cousin was asked to name his MotM. Not having a clue about football, he answered, "I don’t know," so I suggested Andy "Jock" Morrison. "Yeah, he’ll do," was my cousin’s response.

Just after this, I was in the corridor leading to the sponsors' lounge with my cousin’s son, who had his autograph book with him, and Hoddle walked past. I asked him if my young relative could have his autograph, and he replied that he’d do it later. I thought that the last we'll see of him, but to his credit, he came and found us and signed.

One of the Swindon substitutes that day was a certain Fitzroy Simpson.
